Eye abscess in ewes. Help, please.

I've got two ewes presenting with eye abscesses (no idea why). One has clearly git a hole in the cornea: the other has more like a puss and blood filled head.

Is there anything I should be doing other than metacam and antibiotics, please? Is it worth dribbling alamycin into the eye as well as injecting?

Thanks.

That's so distressing to see in a sheep.

If you have Orbenin eye ointment (not cheap, but stays on the eye better than orbenin mastitis tube contents does), use that as directed to keep off further infection and help keep the eye moist.

If not - or until you can get some - bathing several times per day with warm saline solution will help. I've tried making an eye patch before (a patch for covering burns over the eyelids), but it's difficult to get anything to stick, and sheep don't like bandages about the head, ime.

Good luck. Hope they mend soon, because it's surprising how they do.

Weirdly, one of my cats has had an abscess in her eye this last month. This has required a really aggressive regime of ab and (her own) blood serum drops (which sounds like magic) but all she had was a squint.

I'll call the vet re the eye ointment.

I’ve got some spare orbenin eye ointment 16.67% if you can’t get any from the vets.

I doubt that very much! I once read that such eye abscesses can be initiated by fungal infections and was wondering if the the sheep and the cat had regular access to a common area.

I had a look at some photographs of eye abscesses and they must be most distressing for both animals and owners; luckily I had already had my tea well before delving into the matter. Please Pardon the unintentional pun!
