I do not know how, but it is, or rather they are - PAP and closed mouth. Snoring loudly usually involves someone with an open mouth - resulting in a very dry throat when waking. When awake I tend to breathe through the mouth, and in a dentist's chair need to be kept more or less upright because I do not breathe very well at all when reclining or on my back. My throat closes. I have never had any problem, right from the first time I used one (in a hospital sleep test situation) with breathing through my nose and my mouth remaining fairly well closed. If I try, I can open my breathing channels so that the air enters my nose and comes out of my mouth, but it takes a positive effort to do so. A fancy set up in hospital last year showed that I do lose some air through my mouth, hence the full face mask being supplied to me at a critical time. The technician tried several types whilst I was awaiting surgery. It is fine when it is hot, but any drop in temperature and condensation forms inside the mask. Most unpleasant, so I have used the nose only mask all winter. I might try the full face again when it becomes hot, but I find the much smaller nose mask more comfortable and easier to lie on either side (as well as my back) without dislodging the mask. Bedroom temperature needs to be kept up otherwise I have a nose cold enough that I wake up. There is air at ambient temperature being continuously blown at it.
