Heating oil theft

Our house tank got done last year, about 750 litres taken in broad daylight when no one was at home, they must have drieven into the drive and been there a good 10 mins with a well equiped vehicle and a decent pump.

Local police said there had been a spate of them and advised that a lock was best not used as they will drill the tank if they cant get in the top via the filling hole. Then you end up with needing a new tank as well as no oil.

I've got mine locked up and been fine so far *touch wood*. I would of thought it acts as a visual deterrent if anything else but it's true that if thieves want to get to your tank, they'll probably just drill through anyway.

Found a few more tips here. Considering investing in the Watchman Alarm system, which looks pretty good..

the watchman alarm sounds good, will look into one of those, watchman level systems are good pieces of kit anyway.
you are right about if they want it they will take it, we have a plastic tank here , cordless drill job done. even a steel tank aint to hard to drillis it!

Guys ...a New Device launched into the market is the Worlds 1st Pro Active Alarm System - The TANK COMMANDER. It detects an communicates to the thief at your tank that you are aware he is there. Next it Exts off to up to 10 Mobiles and alerts everyone that there is activity around your Tank, Tractor or Harvester, and I'd the thief continues it immediately sends further Texts stating that the protected area is under attack.! At this stage it can activate your Property Alarm or send off a Commander Bell Box which is Solar Powered and you can easily fit on a wall near your Tank.

All fantastic Technology and will be on show at the IFSEC Exhibition in May 13-16 2013. Check out www.tankcommander.co.uk

@Tank Commander

we have recentlly had a theft of red diesel from our tracotr tank, the thiefs used a lid inside the bunded tank into main tank where the watchman is fitted, in this process they broke the watchman unit and took fuel out. Now the watchman after he theift showed a full tank so would these systems you mention detect this or would it miss this?
we only realsied a few days later that fuel had gone because we knew tank should have been half full but watchman showed full.

Hi, I know of an oil supplier who does a fuel monitoring device whereby you can monitor your fuel levels remotely via smartphone or online, their new product offers an alarm facility so you will receive an alert by phone, text email as well as the alarm sounding for 6 minutes. Please ask if you would like some more info and il get you some details.

It was pointed out to me that the lock on the filler cap was useless if the thief had a spanner - all they have to do is undo the nut to the pipe running to the house, and then they have a useful point to fill their barrels, boots etc. Is there something to protect this on the market?

Hi, have just joined this forum and found this thread. There several things that can be down to hinder and deter fuel thieves: installing PIR lights helps deter as does CCTV, keep tanks in buildings if possible, use of plantation to hide tanks can be effective or locate them behind fencing or in compounds and fitment of an alarm system that can be remotely monitored are all effective measures that can be undertaken, hope this is useful.
