IH Case 74 series TA

I have a 574 with a bad TA. (destroyed by misuse by the world and his dog who drive it) In a previous thread (case 695 TA problems 2016) it was suggested that bolting up the TA clutch plates to lock it in high was an often applied fix.

On the 574 TA clutch carrier there are 2 sets of plates, one at the front of the carrier and one at the back. Does anyone know which set of plates should be bolted together to lock it in high and for completeness what does the other set of plates do? - Oh and what size bolts and how many are used.

Thanks.

You can just buy an adapter disc to fix it in high. Goes in the rear pack to make it direct drive. You could then leave out the bottom front gear as it’s not used any more. Job. Done

Thanks for the info, so it is the rear pack that gets locked up. I would rather not spend the 250 quid if I can bolt up the plates and get away with it.

That leaves the question as to what function the front pack serve?

When youve got the tractor took apart why not fix the ta and have the convenience of a shift on the move gear. How much would it cost. Surely couldnt be that bad

Correct, normally I would fix the TA having got as far as taking it apart but as I as I said above the TA was wrecked by abuse from the many drivers (mostly volunteers) this tractor has and the TAs are not known for being a robust bit of kit so to avoid a repeat failure I would rather not have the feature.

This is the plate & it goes in the high side ( the piston side of the TA )
The other side are merely the braking plates that get abused when you pull the lever back into low.
The low side actually drives on the sprag clutch, a one way clutch, between the sprag gear & the shaft.

The other side is the low side driving through the front sprocket with a different number of teeth therefor giving a different speed. The spray bearing allows for the high side to run faster & if the wrong oil is used it can lead to the bearing not keeping clean & slipping on the shaft allowing the tractor to may be run away down hill in low .
