Number of pens required will depend on so many different variables. Maternal ewes lambing at 150% will need a hell of a lot less than terminal sire/ cr*p maternal breeds that have a higher proportion needing a few days in pens, or a prolific flock needing a lot of fostering, etc. Way too many variables to give a ‘right’ answer. I suppose the only answer is ‘enough’. I am only lambing about 160 ewes indoors this year, which will have 36 indoor pens, then another 2 group pens that will holdup to 10 ewes in each, before they can go to another little shed that will hold up to 30 ewes if the weather’s bad. I will fill those individual pens at the start, as I have 35 recipient ewes all due on day one, as well as those tupped naturally. Hopefully only be using half of them by a week later, but doesn’t always work like that. Same pens will suffice for 550 lambing outdoors in April, and then usually only for ewe lambs that might have been handled.
