With lambing and spring calving well underway, what are people finding with regards scmallenberg? Has it improved compared to autumn lambing/calving?
Came home after midnight to find pure lim heifer calving, a bit sharp but managed, just,to get her in a crush to examine, head coming and front legs bent down, whilst struggling to get the feet up we called the vet. Managed eventually to get the feet up and had ropes on them, legs were very stiff. We put the puller on after a small pull on foot broke off at the knee. Vet arrived and after further exmination one of the feet was a back leg. Everything seemed to be coming from all over.
In the end emergency ceasarian, even then the "ball" of a calf was difficult to get hold off, back legs bent to all shapes and ridiculously long, one of which came up under the belly of the calf and was presented under the calf's head. Went to bed at 4.30am.
Vet says probably a schmallenburg but a test at the VI centre is £76, knowing probably wont do us any good anyway as nothing can be done about it.
I'm assuming it is not just shortenened tendons below the fetlock, which will straighten out in a week or so? I would persist to start with, if it can get to suckling without support then surely it's worth giving a chance?Last but one heifer to calve breach presented yesterday, live calf but with bent front legs, will just stand and feed with some assistance. Should I persist or is first loss best loss and find a foster calf?
