Levelling Mole Drain Marks in No-Till

Drilled straight over them here with a unidrill and rolled afterwards. Had to drill at a very shallow angle to them when it was drier, though that was partly how the drill was setup with the springs nearly coil bound. Drilled closer to straight across them in another field which had an axle high osr volenteer cover and moist soil. The ridges from establishing the osr with a shakerator the previous year where more noticeable.

Demoed a simtech in another moled field and the drill wasn't noticeably afected by them. I was more concetened about the tangle weed it was drilling through at the time as the ground was too soft for the discs to properly cut against to notice the mole runs.

If the moling does affecting the drilling the I would just roll before carrying on.

I moled pre (beans )and post drilling (barley rape) in the spring

twin leg simba mole drainer with beams either side of the mole does not leave much of a ridge

rolled some but all headlands

over 1 t per ha yield increase in beans where all the moling was post drilling (very wet may) average 4 t per ha (may be higher when weighed and sold will see next may )

drilled wheat this week could see the mole lines where the dry had opened the mole crack but no problem crossing them

digging next to this crack down to the mole was moist from 2 inches down to soft clay where mole was

in future I will not worry about moleing with a twin leg and no till drilling with only rolling the mole ends

a high rider or a single leg may not be as good because of ridge or wheel tracks of setting a single leg so it pulls behind a wheel track could be a possible solution for no till

drill used is weaving big disc but any notill would be ok as moling at 2.5 m spacing only a small minority of coulter in a mole line

the benefits of moleing far out way any possible pit falls

in future I will re mole more often 3 to 4 year
hoping that moles last longer leads to wet fields and lower returns

We mole wheel to wheel with a single leg mole plough then straddle that with an old Bomford twin leg sub-soiler.. It leaves the land level enough to drill with just a pass with either our harrow or the carrier. Its not something we do very often but when you have created a serious soil structure problem it works..
