The chap in question phoned the dealer up today and said he was not happy with the like for like replacement. So he has now swapped if for a genuine MF S/H part, which ''is a completely different piece of steel.''

That's a good result in my book. :) Thanks for the ideas.

He had a small (period) single ram tipping trailer with the wooden floor and sides on it that was loaded up pretty full with horse muck (straw+shite) which isn't that dense I don't think. I'd estimate no more than 2 tons worth, so trailer wheels were at the rear of trailer and with the trailer hitch length I'd have said about 1 ton on the drawbar.

You are correct about the drawbar, even in its shortest position it does stick out a long way. Even so I'd have expected a material that was likely to bend rather than snap if over loaded. Using a brittle material like cast iron for a draw bar with the dimensions of the 135's is just totally wrong IMO. Imagine if you had your foot under it at the time.

MF drawbars never bend. They do flex a lot under extreme load but always come back to the original shape. At the very extreme it can snap. The new 'genuine' one will not be made by the original supplier of course but one can hope that it is made of the same high grade steel.
The original drawbar frame, not the drawbar itself, will have had a brass plate riveted to it with the Massey Ferguson brand name and serial number.

a normal duty 300series drawbar inner position is only rated at 1000kg, heavy duty 1663kg so 135 bound to be less than that
Its a british standards thing. something like 1300k on long, 1700k on short and 3000k on hook.
dosent matter what size tractor.
you will not break a fergy one except in very extream circumstances,, fords 000 series nearly as good,
414/434 will snap, as will the fordson ones
