mastitis

As @liammogs in my experience, had a ewe lamb few weeks back turned out with twins, sister needed a few lambs as her gimmer lambs had a few slipped, stripped 6 twins for her and went to move them into single field 14 hours later, one had massive swelling in the udder and when brought in was hard, first 6 draws was thick but not clotty, got a hungry lamb to suck out, then again that afternoon and following morning and she was fine. Hit others with draxin, zactan, micotil alongside metacam, using uddermint, ceporex if I remember right, tubes, sometime to no avail, in my experience its how hard they are hit and how soon it is detected most importantly

For past few years I've favoured Pen & Strep over Alamycin LA for mastitis but a recent Cotswold Sheep Group meeting which was run by a vet suggested that Alamycin LA & Anti-inflamatory is the way to go.

What's everyone else's opinion on stripping out the milk from a ewe with mastitis. I stopped doing it after I had a ewe die on me whilst doing it and felt it must have been so painful she died.

I never strip them out. Takes to long, makes a mess and doesn't seam to make much difference. Main thing is to spot it early, don't think you can save the quarter what ever, you might think it's ok but the following year it will be knackered.

big dose of penstrep , and dose of anti inflam/ pain killer ,for 3-5 days will save ewe , best ever though was micotil , one dose and sheep would milk on same quarter in same lactation few weeks later , if caught early , such a shame it was made so difficult to get hold of ,was a wonder AB, tried zactran (similar group i believe but not as good )

Use Tylan here and find it only drug to save quarter. Same drug group as micotil but needs doing for 3 day course.
