About to move hill wedder lambs onto a really good rape/stubble turnip mix. They will have a pretty limited area of grass run-back.Should I be considering any supplementation in terms of mineral buckets, etc.
My advice would be most definitely, as to which option you go for its up to you...
Are they long keep lambs or will they be finished in a few weeks?
Iodine is very important whilst grazing brassicas!
Dependant on breed & history, copper could also be an issue.
There are a range of options out there.. Boluses (you know they have all had one, supplementing the correct amount, only need to do them the once)
Drenches, some cheaper than boluses, but some short-lasting (passed through the animal within days)
Possibly have to do them more than once (added handling & labour costs).
Loose minerals - some take it, others don't simple as!
Brassicas really shouldn't account for more than 70% of a ruminants DM intake, roughage should always be offered.
Never failed to finish lambs on kale with no supplement or run back, had to escape in to a kale field 2 months ago, only just realised.....FAT is an understatement. Didn't seem to do them to much harm.
