A large part of how a grass plant sources its P&K is though associating with AMF (fungal networks through the soil) which supply everything in a plant-available form. The plants put their sugary root exudates in and get what they needThis makes sense, my most purple one is new grass after potatoes
Now a lot of species do this and some don't, eg kale won't and then requires a supply of nutrients (Farmer Man) in order to grow
Down here for breaking in land generally you'd grow 2 or 3 brassica crops which starve out the native biome's AMF and then sow grass, which is usually very "hungry" for 8-10 years as the mycorrizhal fungi rebuild.
(Probably about how we'd go if they bombed and burnt every store and shop in the country)
But the short story is that until there is a store open (working symbiotic relationship with AMF) and money to pay for goods (root exudates from actively photosynthesising) then the plants are on a diet. We need fat roots
