There is a tiny, tiny percentage still around. We had a guy round the farm a few years ago. A proper old school gypsy who traveled with his sons operating a tree surgery business. We were pretty apprehensive about letting him into the yard, let alone employ his services but he had done some work for some neighbours who vouched for him so we tasked him with clearing a load of massive leylandii which had got out of control. He was with us for a fortnight and camped on the farm. He said there was no way he would stay on any of the local sites as they were rife with drugs and theiving and he was desperately trying to keep his boys away from that lifestyle. He blamed the problems with modern pikeys on the influx of Irish Travelers and life being way to easy for recent generations of gypsies with the rise of council parks, easy benefits and PC laws enabling the criminal element to "get away with it". To the point where on some camps if you were trying to live straight and honest you were ostracised and bullied until you left or joined in. Basically all the protections, pandering and pussyfooting around travelers has destroyed their ancient heritage rather than preserve it.
