We have some low ground with no tree cover. Have run sheep only in the past and they have generally been fine hiding in seives, long grass etc. or growth behind fences when it's hot. We're running cattle down there now and although it's not rediculously hot at the mo it was fairly hot in June. So I got in touch with company who said there's a unit in Gloucestershire. Anyone else seen the site before, or the one in the uk? My main question is whether there's any kind of grant funding for this kind of thing as it would be to improve animal welfare by reducing heat stress and potentially providing some kind of cover from rain. Under our HLS scheme we can't plant any trees or hedges as it encourages sparrow hawks and buzzards (despite the countless other habitats it would create alongside the wetland grazing!).

I believe they use something similar at Polyface farm in the US. I had similar concerns about finding it in pieces 14 fields away after a breezy night.

I wondered about a heavier / dual purpose solution. A bale trailer with shade cover attached and also IBCs full of water with hanging drinkers from the sides. Could be dragged around in a mob grazing set up and solves a lot of water pipe too? Dunno. I can see that shade could be a real issue with paddock grazing.

I thought is something similar but would need tractorvto move everyday which could get messy if it cam wet all of a sudden, apparently they'll take up to 40mph winds I think.

How hot is hot? Do you have land in close proximity to this ground with shade? What we do here is put them in the pasture with shade during the day and on the open pasture at night.

I think the shade haven is a good idea for some areas and situations, but at the price they are it makes almost any work around seem economical in comparison. If you got a grant that would help but it still needs regular moving or it just becomes a mud hole.

No shady pasture nearby, the cost of the 500 model is £5700 including shipping, plus I think there's a 10 year warranty. At UK average temps I recon it would provide enough shade for our group of 40-50 yearlings if some are grazing some are shading. So works out at £1.42-£1.14 a beast a year. Not to bad just be nice to have some funding on the initial outlay. Things like this where public money should be going in my opinion as it's improving the lives of the stuff they eat.
