Our old 180,000 gallon store cost £3300 plus the base in 1981 when I scrapped it 8 years ago I got £3k the timing was perfect as scrap was on a high.(y)

I wouldn't dream of putting another up,the only way is concrete, neighbours stores built 40 years ago out of concrete APPEAR TO BE in very good condition.

My alteration in capital italics.

Trouble is our place is set in a bog, I've got reids growing in the yard field and if you dig a hole then it literally fills with ground water.........

I just thought above ground would be the only way unless anybody has other ideas?

Is there any slope from the yard to the field?

I got our local skip hire firm to tip spoil here over a 2 year period to make a large earth bank slurry store. It holds all the slurry from 225 in calf heifers and quite a bit of yard water for a whole winter!

You can just about see the earth bank in the distance. It's taken around 100,000 tonnes of earth. I didn't charge for tipping but I haven't had to pay for a skip for a while either!

A relation of mine dug a 2 million gallon lagoon in a similar sounding place ( but might not be) , essentially a dip in a field with rushes in the bottom. Once they dug through it and got below the wet they struck perfect clay, saved him a bomb cash wise. Might be worth an hour with a digger.

They must be busy! :)

What about shuttering?

Easier to roof over than a tower and if you did you could always put slats on top and cows.

It would have to be stainless steel before I would have another tower.

No slope here, a road 1 side and a bog the other, so unsure of what to do ?

In general, not worth it. I've wasted days looking at hundreds that the owner says are in good condition, and turn out to be falling down. Age doesn't mean anything either, because less than 20 years old means it will have been built with Sikaflex mastic. You can take all the bolts out and it won't fall down, so the inexperienced dismantler will damage the glass coating when he pries the sheets apart. Two pairs of photographs; the first everything looks OK, but when the mastic is removed.......
This tank was condemned immediately.
what has made the edges of the sheets curl?

It was put up as second hand, and obviously the sheet edges were not cleaned up propperly, so water, (this was a water tank for fire fighting) got in to the edge of the sheet and has eaten in to the steel between the enamel. It doesn't corrode at a constant rate, it depends on the elements in the steel alloy, the crystalline structure, and the weather conditions when the mastic was applied! Many people think tank erecting is easy, but a new tank can be ruined before it has held any slurry! Second hand ones, I'm afraid you're more than likely starting off with a sow's ear!
