Huw and Rhian Leyshon had a big sale down in Neath and grossed a lot, according to the FG's report at the time. A lot less cattle, a lot more money in the bank.

Great move at the time, looks even better now I look out the window..

Do you know how the tax man views a move like that?
I guess it would be painful unless there were ways of mitigating it?

That's just what herd/flock basis is for, isn't it? As long as numbers are reduced by 20% and stay below that threshold for 5 years, the difference between the sale proceeds and the 'book' value is tax free.

Yes, looks like a good move on Walt's neighbours part. Isn't hindsight a wonderful thing?:D

I think FT is correct there, I know of many who went out of cattle , some who changed to taking cattle in on B&B basis others who went out of cattle altogether, who simply now could not or would not wish to raise the sort of levels of capital needed to get back into cattle.

A lot of sheep farms devoid of cattle would be better off with the cattle sheep mix re-instated.

Sorry to be stupid in front of animal experts. But what the heck has to do with tax and selling animals maybe going back and buying more or turning the farm to arable or just grow hay etc.

When I chopped all the cows off the farm away back the EU actually gave me more than I got from the buyer of the then dead cow.

I think they have as many cattle now as before the sale and another sale maybe next year
Whichever system they are using, it'll be well-organised as befits a well-organised farming family who've been going a very long time.

I think that they tend towards using Limousin x Belgian Blue x HF genetics (it's what I see for sale with them, anyway) which is classic breeding for quick-ish turnaround cattle that look good, grow well and you needn't be married to.

Agreed but I think you mean bf rather than hf

Seems to be a Pembrokeshire fixation with minutiae that blurs the vision. From a global perspective. Or is it that federalism is alive and kicking there

But EVERY dairy farmer says 'they're more Friesian than Holstein, Walterp...'

Or is it just me they say it to?

[Walterp walks away scratching his head, just like Huw's father used to do, and muttering "if that's true, how come there's only two registered British Friesian herds left in Pembrokeshire?"]

I understand what your saying but they would be closer to bf than hf to have achieved the prices they did
