But would it not be better to mark all ewes you have to put a hand on and cull like the Australians? Sorry, but surely that's the correct approach?

For maternals, that’s pretty much what I do. The camera is used here for the purebred terminals, which are the only ones that lamb in. To cull those for needing a hand, would be to select against hindquarter muscularity in those purebred ewes, something which is evident in those flocks that do.
With the UK’s current EUROP system, where a premium is paid for confirmation, I don’t believe that is the way to go.

Off on a tangent though.....

I do too. I have LED bulbs in the shed, which I leave on overnight. They could run for several years before burning enough electricity to pay for switching tech, which I suspect would still unsettle the sheep as much as it would if I walked over there and switched the lights on.

I’m the same just now, but find the LED white stops them sleeping as well as I’d like. I also have a couple of Sodium lamps (yellow) which seem to do a better job, but do wonder if they settle better under darkness. I’ve tried IR cameras too, but can’t get a decent enough range and the straw gives a horrid reflection to the IR bulbs. That’s why I’m toying with switching them off, not the 10p/day costs.
