Vad or sabre tine to drill into cover crop?

@dontknowanything , Looks impressive, is that on free draining ground? If planted with a CO, is it adapted (GEN 400s).
I wanted a shot at buying @Lord Peasemore old converted CO but it was sold before I had the chance.
Looked today at early Sprinter (CO with bigger tank 2005 but twin vertical springs and no front press wheels) clean and tidy but CO much better value.

Have drilled into grazed and topped covers with a sprinter with gen coulters last spring got good results, if left it might work with the narrow tips or changing for solo coulters. Can't help thinking if we had disc drilled into the grazed tillage Radish leaving all the roots unmoved we may have acelerated the soil improvement.

Yes it is free draining ground, but we will be doing 50ha of quite heavy ground into spring barley in a few months. Just Solos.

I don't think you can really compare them as they're designed for different systems, they are not really competing with each other.

Not in any doubt that a 750a would be the drill of choice but I don't have one right now so just wondered if it 'could' be done with the vad.

I find it quite hard to explain to the sceptical but I really think not disturbing that top 1" of soil is very important. Its almost like what the skin is to a human in my opinion. Essentially it is the interface where all soil life starts to be developed.

Got a couple of hundred of these in yesterday on b&b so we'll see what they do over the next month and then hopefully straight in with the vad with front discs out and then a couple of litres of glyphosate and jobs a goodn!!!???

So the sheep have done their job and moved to pastures new this week so now I guess it's just a case of wait for it to dry up and get it drilled and spray off what's left.

I think either machine will do it now the covers have all but gone.

Would like to mole drain it before I drill if possible but won't be holding out much hope of getting that done.

How did you get on with the Rapid DDing?

TBH it was very poor. Tried with the vad but I just couldn't get it to penetrate the surface, probably because the sheep were on it too long and packed the top down to hard.

Went back in with the sabre tine and managed to get the trash to go through and it did make a pretty good job.

Did get it mole drained before it was drilled as well!!!
