Viewing calving camera over the internet

Have put in a calving camera over this past while with a bridge link from shed to farmhouse, fought with it for a while but got there in the end.
I can view it fine over the home network (BT) in the farmhouse but as I live 50 odd feet away I would ideally like to view it over the internet.
Have been told I need a fixed internet address, I thought a fixed address was just changing it in the settings but it seems that I need to buy one?, had a quick look & they don't seem overly cheap....£500 odd a year.

How are others doing it?

You've got a couple of options

1. Get a fixed public IP address from your ISP, then open the relevant ports on your router and forward them to them internal IP camera address. Getting a fixed IP isn't always possible or the ISP might want to charge you extra for this.

2. You have a dynamic (changeable) public IP address - but it's generally reachable from the Internet. Use a dynamic DNS service like advised above, there are loads to choose from. Then instead of pointing your browser to a number you point it to an alphabetic address like this ismycamera.co.uk or whatever domain name the Dyn DNS provider hands out. It's like looking up a phone directory (when the persons telephone number can change).

3. You are using a 4G based internet service. In this case you may have a 'private' public dynamic IP address. It won't be able to be reached from the internet because the ISP is so called NAT'ing the address twice. This is so they can conserve public IP addresss. More awkward for you but still doable with modest outlay - usually using a VPN connection using software/hardware on your side to tunnel a semi-permanent connection which can be reached from the outside world.
