It seems that grandsons can always (only!) rely on the farmer grandfathers to build all the stuff they get for Christmas! My grandson has always loved his Hornsby train-set, which he mostly keeps here. He told me that he wanted a Virgin Pendolino set for Xmas. They don’t make them any more so I looked on Ebay. The trouble is that Virgin have lost the franchise and all Virgin train-sets are now much more valuable. I kept being outbid to get one in time for Xmas. Then I spotted one that ended on Xmas day at 3 O’clock, thinking that everybody would be either too drunk or watching the Queen to put a last bid in to secure it. As my grandson wasn’t coming here till Boxing Day, I contacted the seller, who lives 10 miles away and asked if I was the winning bidder, if I could pick it up. By Xmas-eve it had already gone over my limit, even though I hadn’t actually placed a bid yet. So I chickened out and went and bought a complete new train-set of a GWR Intercity 125 from a local toy shop. (Intercity 125’s are about to end soon too.) However, at 1 minute to 3 on Xmas day, I was just drunk enough to be watching Ebay and put in a cheeky bid “for the hell of it” and won! Dilemma! I now have 2 train-sets, having already wrapped the GWR 125! Answer - he gets the GWR for his Birthday in May........... However, although he has a track set here, he has the controller box at home and forgets to bring it with him. So I have to hide and unwrap it to take the controller box out of the GWR 125 set! Then, he and his mum decide that they would like to have a proper permanent tack-set at home and they need a track-mat to do so. (They will buy some plywood locally to fix it to.) Again, I have to unwrap what is now going to be his Birthday present to get that out too! I’m getting rather good at re-wrapping presents! Here is track no.2 on track-mat no.2
