The flies I saw in Oz - and my cousin said they were worse than usual then, just my luck - were no more than I've experienced in Southern and Eastern Africa. In all honesty, I found Scottish and Canadian midges and Southern African tsetse far worse than Ozzy flies. Accents are another matter...

Canadian mosquitoes can be so thick some years you breathe then in. Relentless barstools too. Not small either like a midge more like a hummingbird. Toss in a few wood ticks and summer can rival a week with the mother in law.

All these foreign sand flies & mosquitoes & midges make our poor old Aussie flies seem fairly benign
At least they don’t bite or sting
