As ever, it is almost impossible to generalise with a ‘one policy suits all.......’ etc, and as so often the issue is complex. There will be many many genuine cases of financial hardship and a significant number may well include children with two hard working parents who are perhaps on low wages or on terms of no contract employment. Times for families such as these will be hard at the best of times, but possibly much more difficult in bad times such as these. There again there are of course the stereotypical scroungers with large families, no intention of working or doing anything constructive for themselves, invariably adorned with expensive tattoos, and with money for the latest video games, designer trainers, fags and booze and of course the obligatory brindled dog with its studded harness. These may be just one portrayal of two examples of ‘need’. One certainly deserving of society’s help, if only perhaps temporarily through some bad times; the other ‘underclass’ believe society owes them benefits and will always expect to be kept by the rest of us for as long as the welfare state exists. So, as should be self evident, to try and sweep aside with one wide brush all those who may be in real need of free school meals is clearly wrong.
