young calf eyes - going blind?

AA calf born outside. Brought both cow and calf in as calf looked like it hadnt sucked after 1 day. Looked a bit stiff so gave plenty of milk, AB, Metacam, Vitasel and seemed to be recovering (and sucking) but a couple of days ago her eyes started going blue, put Optiplex in eye and jabbed again now it looks blind. Spoke t vet yesterday and she didnt seem bothered and said it would be ok. Im not convinced. Both eyes look white spots. Im not happy about this and worried that the damage is already done.

ANy thoughts or advice. Calf is otherwise healthy.

had a bunch of I/c hfrs in yesterday, one was limping, no trouble, picked out the lame one, hell of a job to get it in the crush. small white spot on each eye. small reaction to waving my hand by her eyes, in 1 eye only, waved a stick- no reaction at all, back out with the rest of the bunch, nothing whatsoever to suggest she's partly blind, I suppose they learn to adapt, but we have seen nothing in past handling to suggest any thing wrong

Had one born in spring that seemed blind. Cow had been on straw and treacle and may have missed out on minerals. I jabbed calf with large dose multivit as suspected vitamin shortage.
Sight has recovered, no other cases.
I introduced a bit of hay into diet.

Funny you say that, I’ve had cows and heifers on straw and treacle and I’ve had 2 cows with it, 2 heifers and 3 Young calves with it too.

Your probably spot on!

Jumping on the thread! Did your calf recover as I think we may have one the same. Calf came off cow fine then within a day both eyes cloudy. Injecting her, calf is absolutely fine otherwise.

I had calves born with low levels of blindness last summer I blamed the drought. I injected with vitamin a, vitasel and cortisone steroid. They came right. One took a fortnight they wouldn’t suck either

Selenium deficiency causes cloudy eyes and blindness if not addressed. Easily fixed with a vitamin shot, usually do 3cc injected and 3cc oral of selenium and vit E, clears it up right away.
