Blue X heifer's

While I'm swinging my handbag I might take a swipe at young Martin too with his biased comments on the milking abilities of Herefords. I might retaliate by saying Simms are hard feeders or poor shape but I won't because I expect he has some good ones. Likewise I had good Herefords. So do plenty others.

Martin says there are different types of sim cattle within the breed but also seems to sometimes suggest that there is only one type of any other breed when he wants to dismiss them for some reason
not being funny, no handbags, just something I have noticed before

I would suggest that out of the pure breeders on TFF that I will be one of the few who will point out faults within their own breed, like strains of Simmental with lack of milk, poor growth and difficult calving.

Now I am not naive enough to assume that there aren't these variations within all breeds not just our own, but breeds do tend to have general trends, like Sims don't often win fatstock shows, or Culards aren't a very functional suckler dam, or a BBxHol cow isn't best suited for outwintering.

There are exceptions to these rules, but they are generally somewhere near the mark.

On the subject of Hereford milk....

We had a few beef Hereford cows in the past - not out of dairy cattle - and they were generally the poorest milkers in the herd at any given time. Grossly fat , a great skin on them , but the smallest , lightest calves in the herd at foot. Like too many of the popular Native breeds , the workrate was lacking. This is why we went to the Continent in the first place to up the ante.

You have to have an honest , frank approach to your own breed , otherwise you're living in denial. No breed is faultless. Can all other breeds say this?

@CharcoalWally "We" went to the Continent and now we are looking at home again. There are herds of all breeds getting it wrong but credit where credit is due, there are some herds out there, Gomer was one of them, that cull hard for feet and milk defects. Consequently we had milky cows. These breeds should change with the demands being asked. There are plenty of bulls in the AI tank which will throw the milk back into a herd. Trouble is getting people to see that it is important. A suckler cow is just that which is why more emphasis should be put on the maternal traits of all the breeds except those that aren't required to rear a calf but then they will be milkers.....
I'm bored now.

If there are other types within other breeds , then surely it is up to other breeders within those breeds to tell us about it. Those of us who breed Simmentals have been totally open about the diversity in our breed , and have discussed the consequences , both good and bad.

If fans of the other breeds have got something to say , or some point to make , about different types within their breed , or if they want to talk about what they feel is wrong with their cattle breed of choice , then I wish they'd hurry up and get on with it , instead of sitting around moaning about outside breeders criticising their breed.

If you sit in silence , nothing ever gets explained.
