Building a match plough

Re the "As manufactured " rule. manufactured by whom, exactly? You all seem to be manufacturing your own ploughs, so that wording is pretty useless! Mind you, the ploughs are not vintage either!
I don't understand, my plough is vintage ie it was in production before 1959 ? I would of though "as manufactured" was pretty obvious ie how it came out the plant that built it in the first place...

All these ploughs built up from third furrow components have never been near a plant, well not in their present form. My KV has bodies for Devon, beam sections from Somerset, land wheels from Cornwall etc etc.It was built(manufactured) by myself, so is "as manufactured" but not the the manufacture the stewards expect. They say its modified, but its not, I made it that way from the start!

I think there is a general assumption that we talking about the original equipment manufacturer ie Ransomes, KV, etc who made it in serial production ie more than a 1 off. So to qualify in the vintage class, if ide decided to build my own plough, I would have had to do it before 1959 and built more than one. I know this is all a bit picky, but there are some general asumptions that are not written down. Anyway, pointless debate, because unless your in the Fergie class, nobody gives a stuff!

I do get irritated when people walk past me and my plough and make remark about my "gizmo's", ignorant @rses! All I have on my plough is a cross-shaft I can move by winding, a quick entry top link, both no different to what Ransomes intended, and some skimmers and a depth wheel that works! (which I tell them fairly bluntly). I personally have no issue with massive mods, but I think it should be in the classes where its allowed, where its more about the pure quality of the job no matter what equipment is being used ie Euro style. Vintage/classic should be about doing the job with. lets say 'near original' equipment, keeping the skill and equipment alive for that era. I know this will probably be a little controversial, but hey ho, its a forumn....

It has to be said that the most incomprehensible rules originate from those who never need to obey them! The next level down come from those who cant do the job, and are jealous of those that can, and put that down to the equipment in use. They then try to become sucessfull by making everyone use the poor kit they have

Its the British disease Ley ! Famous bloke once quoted buy a Rolls-Royce in America every one will stand and admire it, buy a Rolls-Royce in Britain and some one will run a set of key's down it :( the people on here have some great ideas and engineering ability that should not be stifled buy people who haven't got the balls or know how to try and convert these plough's to produce something that show's their skill as a ploughman and engineering ability ! :)

Match ploughing is an art form, being a horizontal sculpture. Like any art, it evolves, and then suffers from philistines who want to drag it back to the basic form it started with.

See some lovely pictures on here of some great ploughing up and down the country and I suppose that's what inspires all of us on here to aspire to plough like the Pennine, Arco's, Ley's and all the other blokes on here that have mastered this art form learnt a lot on here the last few months hopefully it will bring some more youngsters through with the ideas that all you blokes share with the rest of us ? :)

I know what you mean. It's a bit odd really, because the British are also very inventive and are very good with coming up with ideas to improve things, but then people moan and groan about the modifications done...

Hooked this out of a bramble patch this morning TS 59 m with yl 183's on will look at using the third furrow frame to make a plough out of, was wondering if this model m 59 lends it its self to be converted very well or not ?

Perfect. The boards look well pitted but may be recoverable.
I should have got some close up's of the boards Bob because although the plough was smothered in brambles and nettles it was used by my friend 3 years ago and then greased I don't think the pitting is as bad as it seem's in the pictures fingers crossed :)

Does anyone think these boards will be recoverable????View attachment 199584
right first off get them sand blasted, this is the only way to get to the bottom of the pits, if you dont stop the rust pits they will just get deeper, then you can see if they are worth doing any more with,
i have wondered if it might be worth trying something like filling the pits with JB WELD or the likes, and then polishing them

but they do look a bit far gone

I have often wondered if you could get pitted boards ceramic coated.
You could buy ceramic wear parts which were supposed to wear better and stop soil sticking which sounds like a good idea to me.
Thre is a company called Curtiss Wright Metal Improvemants with branches across the UK that specilise in such coatings but weather the cost would be prohibitive I do not know.
