This morning I received this Months Farmer and Grower, yes, I am a NFU member and probably biased as an ex staff member!!. @ Guy Smith. But sat in the middle of Lincolnshire I did not expect to get the welsh consultation paper with a forward by Stephen James! I thought only the RPA did tricks like that!!

Sorry about that, it sounds like something went awry in Lincolnshire. I will ask some questions when I'm in my office on Tuesday.

Meanwhile the questionnaire is available to members on our website - and I'm sure someone as progressive as you would rather do it digitally.

Looking at some of the questions, they just as well been in Welsh.

The problem is that it is complex. I'm just back from doing 14 member meetings around the country this week with another ten to do. ( There is over fifty altogether). Considering the time of year turnout has been very good with 50-100 in attendance each time. Obviously we would have much rather had these meetings in the darker months to suit working farmers but unfortunately the timing of Brexit events didn't allow this.

The meetings went really well with good presentations from NFU staff and good comments and questions from members.

The NFU has launched a post-Brexit options paper and given its members the chance to voice their opinions on what they think is needed from a future domestic agricultural policy post-Brexit.

This marks the start of the official consultation period - the largest NFU consultation in a generation - which will include 50 meetings across the country for members to attend and discuss the options with officeholders and policy advisers.

The consultation ends on 14 September 2016 – the day the NFU will hold its Back British Farming Day to share a vision of an exciting, dynamic farming future with MPs.

The meetings have been well attended for the time of the year and I believe congratulations should go to the NFU for bringing out such a clear and comprehensive paper on the options for Brexit in such a short time.

I would have been interested to know how many of the attendees at these events were Leavers!!
I have a suspicion that they were very much in the minority.

My impression was there was a good mix of views - reflecting what our surveys found last autumn and Spring - about 2:1 remain:leave. And I'm conscious there are some who didn't feel passionately one way or the other.

But what I've found very encouraging is a determination to see this as an opportunity rather than a threat. We mustn't underestimate the size of the challenge for our industry with Brexit but we mustn't be intimidated by it either. It's essential we stay positive and build a new beginning on the front foot rather than feeling we are on the back foot.

I was talking to some well connected people from the Welsh media and plaid Cymru and the both genuinely believe Brexit will take at least ten years to sort out due to the complexity of untangling all the EU laws that we have adopted over the decades not to mention the inevitable legal challenges to the Brexit vote that plaid Cymru have taken advice on and think they have a very good chance of succeeding with even if it just means delaying the inevitable.

So basically what I'm saying is that this consultation may have to go on for a very long time and that the goalposts may get moved several times before we know exactly what we're up against. Well done to the nfu for arranging the consultation documents and meetings but I can't help feel that it might well be a very long journey.

Anyone been to any of the Brexit consultation meetings the NFU are now holding around the UK??

Yeah went to one of the Devon ones,

Needless to say the NFU (&the industry as a whole) have a huge task a head.
In just that room there was a huge range of opinions, from Big business dairy boys saying they were embarrassed to receive subs and didn't think the nfu should even ask for future farm support,
Right through the opinion spectrum to hill boys wanting decent support for environmental stuff.

Got a decent feed :D(y)

This really annoys me, that political parties that only exist in a democracy.....are trying to stop a democratic vote

The vote is done now, potential legal challenges etc etc are just causing un-nessessery damage, when as a country we need to be accepting the result and making the best of it!

Have schools stopped teaching kids what democracy means in the last half century to end up with these morons amongst us!

Absolutely agree. I see it as an opportunity too but some politicians just want to stay on the gravy train for as long as possible.
