It had absolutely nothing to do with "standing up to the EU" our processors from the days of the MMB onwards failed to be innovative and develop new products to meet the market demands. It was easier for them (and the supermarkets ) to import the finished product. It was compounded by an economic policy that maintained the £ at a level that made imports cheap. It will be interesting to see whether the government will be able to keep the pound at is current level, if it does it will give the UK dairy sector another chance to respond to the market opportunity (at the expense of the Irish in particular!). I bet the red meat sector would like to have a similar opportunity in the context of Brexit!

Sadly I doubt it. If it doesn't go straight into a bottle there will be no serious investment.

I got back from Holland, Belgium & France - everywhere a huge range of branded products including many from Campina, nothing from Arla.

I drove up to Denmark last summer, stopping a various places on the way. There was quite a few Arla products in the north of the Netherlands this summer and a reasonable selection of Hansano products in Northern Germany (Hansano is the brand for Hansa-milch which merged with Arla at the same time as Milklink). Lurpak butter is also strong in Germany (although not as strong as Kerrygold).

I would agree that Arla has very little business in France or Belgium. Now we have more owners in Belgium there is a plan to grow sales there. I can't say I have seen much Campina in France either, the French seem to have a very strong 'buy French' ethos.

The selection of Arla branded products in Danish and Swedish supermarket is amazing, In fact the variety of branded dairy products is amazing, so many different milks, cultured milk and drinking yoghurts.

Would you be in the same position now of FM paying back what they owed, if the milk price was 18p? i doubt it. the real judge of how well FM are doing is when the market is on the down, other than Arla direct, everyone at the moment is having a 'good do'

Rob the real test now for the FM Board is now that they have stabilised the company they need to get the value of members capital back up to nearer the £1 per share value and pay a dividend on capital held.

Well done to the team at First Milk. What could have been an extremely dire situation for hundreds of farmers has been a hard slog but you colectively have pulled through.
Look back and learn from the mistakes but also look forward and try to build a better and brighter future for yourselves. Whether that means still supplying First milk only you can decide. Sometimes it takes are hard knock to really reshape a business.
We all need to make sure we are not the next DFOB or First milk!

What a difference. What's the members goss on Gallagher? Do you think he's going to stay and try and build the company up now he's stabilised? Would be interesting to see what changes he'd make over say the next 3-5 years.

Arla were here around the kitchen table, very tempting after the last 2 years we've had. But ur numbers look fantastic, and do they reward far better on constituents? With your constitiuents there u would be over 28 pence if you were Lake District, but this divide between the different pools certainly isn't healthy. Are you anywhere near the border line of aspatria? If u tried to twist someone's arm they'd maybe switching u onto Lake District? Or even Haverfordwest west! Ud be minted if u were at Haverfordwest! I really really want a takeover for Christmas 2017/2018...
