But aren't they pulling in opposite directions by pledging to 'grow more, sell more and export more' while working with Natural England (who from my experience have only ever wanted to reduce production) to produce a 25 year plan.
Do they know what they are doing 25mins ahead......?!

So the issue is kicked a little further into the long grass?

2 years is hardly a blink in farming - whichever side of the subs argument you chose.

And - if they can change/ignore/overrule the law re fixed term parliaments as they see fit, I wouldn't hold out on a pledge for a week next Tuesday, never mind 5 years time.

well they'll be import taxes of 46% on cheese and 20% on tomatos for starters.....tarrifs cut both ways

the supermarkets/govt have got the wind up about rising food prices....thats why subsidies must continue because a countryside unplanted.....risks huge food inflation

No, WTO rules set maximum tariffs, not minimum ones. If the UK is trading under WTO rules we're perfectly entitled to unilaterally set our tariffs at zero if we want to. So the idea that imports will get more expensive is not true.

Sensible announcement from the Tories. As mentioned, no chance of putting together a decent alternative for 2021.

I guess smart farmers will be getting up to speed on enviro schemes now. The past has shown that those already 'on board' are more likely to be favoured.

Its a common Remain myth that if we are trading under WTO rules that tariffs 'have' to be at certain levels. Its nonsense. The UK could unilaterally declare free trade for all imports if it chose to. The WTO is an organisation dedicated to liberalising world trade, and reducing tariff levels, its not going to demand a country impose tariffs when it doesn't want to.

Get a gun. Once you've shot everything you can get money to let them come back. Like hedges. Paid to knock them down. Paid to put them back up.......

We visited some new grant aided state of the art dairy farms showcased in this area by ADAS or MAFF when I was a lad.

A few years later they were paying them to stop production.

It just goes round and round.

Anyway, at least the subs will see me through till (early) retirement. Or maybe I will finally have worked out how to do the job right by then.
