Claydon drill

Good morning, I have been browsing the classified pages on the forum and can't help but notice the disproportionate amount of claydon drills for sale. I own a 3metre hybrid and it makes me wonder if why so many are selling? Am I missing something?

Hard to say really. I know of 3 members who are selling Claydons due to buying no till drills. Hardly a step backwards, is it? I'm sure there are some who bought them thinking they would fix everything but they haven't lived up to expectations. I don't think they are a cure for blackgrass/other weeds & my slug pellet usage has certainly gone up!

thinking a little more...Most of the ones for sale are 3m models. perhaps people used the smallest model to dip their toe into strip till and now are upgrading. BTW i claydoned all my acreage this season and the crops are doing well. Wheat is almost ready, just got to wait for the weather LOL

I'll bet Jeff Claydon sells 3 x 3m machines for every one 4, 4.8, 6 & 8m that leaves his yard - there will always be the smaller ones more likely to be traded. There's also the issue of hp requirement. Lots of Hybrids being pulled by tractors much bigger than they need to be but the drill works best at 12 kph & we've all got horrid bits of ground where establishment is hardest. @Flintstone swapped his 3m one for a 4m fairly quickly once he realised he could pull it better than he thought originally. My 6m doesn't take much pulling 70% of the time & you can hear the engine revs drop as it cruises along in auto on the lighter land. The other 30% of the time she's on her knees begging for mercy...

Not all those drills would still be for sale, a lot of the adverts don't get updated when sold. Also a 3m drill results in an awful lot of turning and wheelings especially when a 5 or 6m drill was used before. With later drilling now the norm, perhaps the daily output of a 3m drill is not enough for a lot of farms ?

Why so much HP. I thought these drills didn't need all that grunt. Wouldn't need that much if you were powerharrowing and drilling .

I'm pulling 19 legs at 6" deep over 6m width direct into uncultivated stubble. That's still a lot of horses required on stiff ground. Are you thinking of a no till drill where power requirement is around 25 - 30hp/m due to no disturbance?

Look at a Topdown/Discordon/Solo type machine of that width & whilst the Claydon is not moving as much soil or got the discs & press gangs you'd still need 500+ hp to do it. To sow 100 acres/day you'd need 500+ hp on an 8m power harrow/drill combi to do that kind of output on ground already ripped up. Compare like with like.

Ha ha yeah, I don't think that I could pull the drill at 14k though. Brisel, do you have the leading tines at 6 inches all the time or adjust for different crops? I found a deeper setting on leading tines has lead to better establishment
