Anyone on here in the Firewood game?

Hi Nick, could you let me know how much you would charge for a similar load to north Herts? I presume it's hardwood mix? I would like to run it through a processor so wouldn't want anything too big. Cheers
You can PM me if you prefer.
All softwood I'm afraid although there would be some hardwood in load
Same load hardwood would set u back £1500
Load delivered would be. £500
Woods free just want haulage money

Cheers Nick, when you say soft wood what does that consist of? I presume fir etc. if so no good to me, but some people call birch, sycamore, etc softwood, which I don't mind.

I'm going to have a go at firewood over the winter. I'm looking at 'competitors' in my local area and I've been wondering why they are selling their product so cheap.

Anyone dried logs on a vented drying floor?

Dear A1an please look at the costings closely, you can easily be a busy fool,
You'll never see a rich man involved with timber,
Have been supplying firewood for 35 yrs, it's just part of what I do, likewise I have customer that have been with me for 35 yrs,
As said, every man and his dog thinks logs are easy money,
I know take the farm pickup, farm chainsaw, on a damp day cut up a couple of trees, sell to local pub for beer tokens, easy money,
Or buy a processor at let's say £10k, buy in wood at £55 ton, oh yes will have sell them at £100 per cube,
GOOD BLOODY LUCK.
Stick to what you know, believe me the grass isn't always greener.

Oh so true! I only know two full time firewood sellers. They've both been going a similar time to you. Both Chilterns based so the timber doesn't travel too far.

As for drying timber for logs is madness, you just need to be 2/3 yrs in advance with stock,
Mate has just set up drying plant, grant funded, 2 bloody great boilers, heating water to be converted to hot air to be pumped into drying building, that's also new,
This is classed as environmental friendly, alternative fuel, but no one before grants, dried logs, so how the hell is it an alternative fuel,
Worlds going mad.

Hi Grainboy
We are at a slight advantage as we have 9000 acres of commercial forestry on the estate, we harvest 30,000 tons of timber per year so there are always loads of oversized/windblow/damaged timber about. I can take my pick from Sitka, Larch, Beech or Birch.
The Estate also has 13 rental properties, all of which have a log burner in them so no need for delivery vehicles, bags can be delivered to the garden gate with our telehandler. Tennants are currently buying logs from the petrol station forecourt at silly money.
