Brexit

so given that a no deal brexit is looking fairly likely what impact would this have on your agricultural business? As a sheep farmer things don’t look great. Just wondered what others outlooks were ?

Why isnt it looking good compared to a deal?

I take it you're not being serious but just in case .

Tariffs at an unknown level but maybe between 40% and 0% but of greater concern the ability of EU member states to affect arbitrary administrative controls for whatever they can think up to undermine trading confidence to protect their producers. The French are quite good at this !

To crash out of the Single market / Customs union with no deal is economic suicide. WTO tarifs are negotiable - as Bombardier have found - but Non Tariff barriers are not. That means Border Inspection Posts and delays at ports.
We are set up for ro-ro ferry transport, fast turnaround, with ease of movement from Manchester to Milan, as from Manchester to Mablethorpe. For perishables, and phyto-sanitory products the BIPs would need a large % of physical inspections as well as regulatory convergance, for our product to enter the EU. Think lorries stacked.

The EU is a fortress, with free movement inside, and the drawbridge is raised. Suddenly we are outside, trading as a 'third country', so different rules apply. And that needs time, money and expertise to put into place.

A 'no deal' is crazy and agriculture will suffer more than most, especially our lamb exports, 90 per cent of which go into the EU.

But you would be amazed at how many beef and sheep men voted out.
I still don't see what they think will be better when out of the EU but its too late now.
some are hoping it will make their neighbours go bust or just give up so they can expand on to their land!
no one thinks that they will be the ones having to give up.....

As an in voter.. and the starter of the thread I’m always surprised at how quick out voters scoff at my decision - but I’m ok with that. I like most spend my days out getting the work done and I’m becoming rather alarmed at the state the “brexit” talks. When the beeb state that the uk government already have plans in place for a no deal brexit - should it happen then that’s one plan more than they have for a rational brexit.. this alone should be very worrying to most.

The thing that stands out in the responses to this quote is that they are none of them complimentary of the EU or the states that will remain in it.

To be fair to @rob1, he didn't say which sort of deal, and that is key. If it is the sort of deal that the EU want, whereby we pay a huge amount, are subject to its whims and gain nothing, the UK will not benefit in any way. I know the question was about farming, but it has to involve the well-being of the country as a whole too.

We are lamb and beef with a side-line in hospitality; I wanted Brexit and still do, the lamb market will be tougher for a while, the beef probably less so. We have chosen breeds and methods with this in mind, much lower inputs for slightly lower outputs than 'traditional' ways.

We are also looking at a few things which will probably be much more competitive to farm here post Brexit; I know several around here and others in the South East of England who are also looking at branching out in similar ways. None of us are owed a living, markets will change and we have to adapt.

Despite them sometimes being a bunch of irascible b*ggers, if the rest of the farmers across the UK are like my neighbours here, I think there will be a lot of initiative used and the short term rough ride will not be as bad as some are painting it - remember the 'horror' that was going to come straight after the referendum?

We voted out of a political constrict we never agreed with as far back as 1975. We did not expect this government to make such an almighty hash of our exit. After 44 years, they have lost the ability to think and to govern except on hollow sound bites.

So a democratic vote to eschew the liberal socialist politics of the EU is most probably going to end up with a near Marxists Socialist UK government who will tax us all until we squeak, borrow until we are even more buggered than we are now !

Brilliant.

Do they call that the law of unintended consequences.

Unintended, or intended? Chaos capitalism is not unknown.

So a democratic vote to eschew the utterly undemocratic EU will be implemented. The EU (really the EC) will do what it can to make our life difficult. There may be tough times for a while and then... there won't. We are a resilient country, we will adapt, go forward and prosper. Don't panic, don't buy all the doom and gloom spread by bad losers and stirrers. Have some faith in your countrymen and yourself.

Seems to me that you would put up with anything.

Who knows perhaps the whole country is made up of wimps who'll just role over and die.

But you never know, perhaps ordinary people will actually get off their arses and stop letting politicians create havoc ?

You do have a choice other than moaning you know.

When I voted to Leave I knew we'd have multiple general elections until the system changed ... it's obvious because people like you won't beleive they have to do anything to stop the corruption and destruction of our society at the hands of the self centred few. I have faith in the people of the UK, most of whom can do a far, far better job than any of those in Westminster.

So take a chance, get involved or are you going to leave that to your children ?

Thankyou you have just reminded me why I haven't posted on here for about eight months.

You presume to have a detailed knowledge of my thoughts and activities , you haven't and how wrong you are .

All the tack & some good, goods that fill our shops from the non EU countries have a WTO tariff of which EU keeps 75% off.

May said in Westminster yesterday that they would effectively use this money to subsidise our industries so Mr Sheep farmer or Mr Toyota will be no worce off.

Time will tell off course.

You do not need to wait for 'time' - it's a lie.

WTO rules forbid the arrangement you describe.

Rules are easily bent, dont you remember all the excuses used to stop beef exports, all very dodgy but they werent challenged.just like the steel china dumped on the world market
