I route the overflow from our springwater tank (2000l) into another tank (1200l) which serves the polytunnel, garden, kennels etc. Neighbour reported this tank was leaking a couple of weeks back & when I checked found a split about 1ft long had developed. I'm sure it was nothing to do with the trees that Western Power had recently lopped... anyway something had to be done.
Found some brand new (i.e. newly emptied ) IBC's on Ebay not too far away so away I went to collect a couple @£30. Got 6l of castile soap out of one (the wrokshop has never smelt so good) & about 3l of almond oil from the other (don't quite know what to do with that) as a bonus.
Bunged one in straight away to get the yard taps running, & jobs a good 'un. I did find the plastic tank connector for overflow was only just manageable with my arm length though...
Anyway today I thought I'd install the second one, connected to the first by a 2" waste pipe with tank connectors each end (new ones, sorry - but the rest was all second, third or fourth hand). Having drilled the 2 3/8" holes in both, at a level just below the overflow from tank 1, I then found I couldn't reach the bloody backnuts at all :banghead: The long side of the IBC was just too far to reach. The backnuts are about 2 3/4" AF & I didn't have a spanner, socket or box spanner that would fit, & waterpump pliers would be a real potch with the certainty of dropping them into the IBC at some stage.
On with the bodging hat... found a bit of plastic downpipe roughly the right size, heated the end with the hot air gun & waggled it over the hex of the backnut then plunged in water to set in posish. Instant 2 3/4" box spanner:finger:

Quite pleased with the outcome, really - I only dropped one of the backnuts & fished it out first attempt with a hazel stick plastic box spanner worked a treat & no leaks (typical when it doesn't really matter eh?)
