Cheapest way to store slurry?

Tower gives you the option to have a cover over it which has the double benefit of keeping rainfall out & volatile ammonia in. As we are seeing increased frequent heavy downpours this may be a consideration.
However it will be more expensive. IIRC, a lined hole is about £20/ cube stored & a tower around £30/cube. The tower may also give you option of expanding it by adding rings which would be difficult with a lined hole.
The cheapest option of all (other than selling/reducing stock) is if you have blue clay on the farm which will not need lining

Blue clay? You obviously don't visit many farms lol Iv only ever seen one lagoon lined with blue clay... some lagoons are barely lined with normal clay... have even seen one that was border line sand and they've all been passed through proper channels....

The one that was border line sand did have to have clay carted in and re lined because the walls slowly caved in on it though.....

I’ve heard of a lot of lagoons being ruined by badgers going through the clay and through liners! Stirrers commonly go through liners too.

Lagoon is cheapest if you are on huge quantities but the volumes your talking of a tower would be best imho. A lot of the big lagoons around here they empty with the umbilical and then send in the 434’s and spreaders and empty the solids out too.

The best, most efficient and I bet no more expensive than anything else is under slats
I wouldn't do that at any price.
Although it's great in theory not only is it popular in Ireland, the number of deaths from gas are also far too common there.
I'm sure farmers are aware of the risk and I don't suppose they're idiots but accidents do happen and what would any of us do if we saw a member of our family in trouble? I don't think I could stand back saying it was too dangerous if there was only the slightest chance I could save someone and we all know how that ends.
Much easier not to have the risk in the first place even if alternative storage is more expensive, what price do you put on a life?

Yes you are correct, far far too many deaths, and yes they all know the risks, every child growing up on Irish farms are taught the risk, they are well aware, just the same as my 7 year old son knows not to go near the bulls, yet accidents still happen

Thanks for the replies everyone. If we site the store near (or below) the yard then it will have to be a tower or a concrete structure as the ground is fairly steep and there's a small river running not too far away. We do have a flat piece of land about 500m away which is about 200ft higher than the current slurry pit which would suit a lagoon but we'd then need to pump the slurry up to it. This wouldn't be a huge issue as most of our land is even higher anyway so at least we'd be pumping it in the right direction i.e. up hill.

Either way it's going to cost and selling the cattle would probably make sense but with brexit what's the future for hill sheep and their small lambs. Plus we're already having issues with wormer resistance, fluke and scab etc etc in the sheep and don't really want to put all our eggs in a very dodgy basket....
