What size pit ?I agree efficient, but not with expense.
I priced slats and columns to cover our existing concrete roofed pit,was more expensive than the pit!

That's a wide span to cover with slats140'x45'x8'6"
True and true. Concrete in Ireland is way cheaper and they're not afraid to use it!That's a wide span to cover with slats
And of course you are the wrong side of the Irish sea too
But not only is it cheaper slats are normal and any farm builder will be experienced with them , here they are a bit exotic and hence expensiveTrue and true. Concrete in Ireland is way cheaper and they're not afraid to use it!
Tower gives you the option to have a cover over it which has the double benefit of keeping rainfall out & volatile ammonia in. As we are seeing increased frequent heavy downpours this may be a consideration.
However it will be more expensive. IIRC, a lined hole is about £20/ cube stored & a tower around £30/cube. The tower may also give you option of expanding it by adding rings which would be difficult with a lined hole.
The cheapest option of all (other than selling/reducing stock) is if you have blue clay on the farm which will not need lining

I wouldn't do that at any price. The best, most efficient and I bet no more expensive than anything else is under slats
Double the moneyHow would a 50ft x 50ft + 15ft foot thinck concrete walled/floor tank in the ground compair price wise to the equivalent 250000gal above ground steel tank.?
Yes you are correct, far far too many deaths, and yes they all know the risks, every child growing up on Irish farms are taught the risk, they are well aware, just the same as my 7 year old son knows not to go near the bulls, yet accidents still happenI wouldn't do that at any price.
Although it's great in theory not only is it popular in Ireland, the number of deaths from gas are also far too common there.
I'm sure farmers are aware of the risk and I don't suppose they're idiots but accidents do happen and what would any of us do if we saw a member of our family in trouble? I don't think I could stand back saying it was too dangerous if there was only the slightest chance I could save someone and we all know how that ends.
Much easier not to have the risk in the first place even if alternative storage is more expensive, what price do you put on a life?
No but straw probably isThey are not exotic up here!
It is this year!No but straw probably is
