Martin has mentioned our climate down here on more than one occasion but we have had times like he described and times in the summer when two inches of grass would go best part of a foot up a cows leg

but then

all together now, the other mans grass is always greener the sun.................

Actually no I'm not aware of that. I do accept that many countries provide subsidies but how much if any that actually affects the world price I have no idea maybe you could quantity that for me?

The problem we face down the road is not just the reduction in agricultural support which is likely, ( although it is possible that we will be less affected in Scotland than the RUK). It is opening up the UK To tariff free imports from producers we are currently protected from, and that is I think highly likely.
Well ill give you a clue, ireland is our main competitor for beef and its one of the highest subsidised countries in the world and 5th biggest beef exporter, a recent report i read stated they would never be able to compete on the world market without subsidies due to the high cost of production compared to south america

Operative word talking about !
What is it with our average payments that bothers you so much ?
I mentioned acres that you have cancel out that but your response is the maintenance of the extra acres , I'm baffled !
We have a higher stocking rate which in turn leads to higher costs per acre , which also cancels it out !

On grass growing all year same can be said for places in Scotland, location location

Snow in winter , only had showers but all stock are housed

Now you have access to cheaper straights and more alternative feeds which should lower your feed costs plus 30/40p /kg above our prices ...where's the killer cost coming in ?

Now you mentioned you have traveled across here many times apart from our massive sorry no fooking huge subs did you pick up anything else ...
Concentration on paddocks
Take surplus as high quality for young stock
Calving at 24mths
Working on cow calf weaning weights
Trying to get young stock out in early spring
Closed paddocks early for the early turnout, and in a rotation to give all 120 days rest ..

The irish are good farmers i have no doubt as are many here, the point is YOU ARE well supported AND our main competitor, where does that leave us without support?

are you suggesting an on farm butchery and selling to farmers markets? too many doing it now i know of a farmer that did it but stopped there wasnt a margin in it
No not suggesting that at all, read the post before jumping to assumptions. I am suggesting a Co-operative model.
If the farmer you mention was selling direct to the public and there wasn't a margin in it then that would make a mockery of the suggestion that all the profit in in retail.
I would also suggest that instead of looking for problems try and find solutions a good start would be to read the interview with Mike Murphy? on the link posted earlier, it may have been on a different thread @lazy farmer would find it.
A more positive attitude would help instead of the stereotypical dour Scotsman.

If you pefer to swap ...(y)

You need to surround yourself with a few radiators to see what you can do , are you in a discussion group ?? If you are and they are on the same hymn sheet change quick ..

The people who need to watch that, won't.

When you become a real farmer and not just playing at it as a hobby then maybe people on here will take note of what you say, trouble is you are telling us that we should do this/ that yet you haven't even done any of these things yourself in the UK climate so have no idea or not if they will actually work on the ground... you couldn't make it up........................

Why don't you show the rest of us how it should be done??...................

Fairs fair everyone's aloud express there opinion that's the beauty of here, if you don't agree with point do as we all do mumble and move on , no need for the personal attack , what does that gain anybody :(

Thanks for posting the link. It really is a good read.
Now here's a thought. If subsidies are removed the backward looking Luddites who cannot survive without them could be replaced with the Mike Murphys of the world then New Zealand and the other big exporters would have some serious competition.
Never a truer word spoken. according to last weeks conference 85 %of the worlds milk production is via confinement. The other 15 % has massive cost advantages a green story to tell and a healthier product to sell. same would be true of other livestock sectors.

:ROFLMAO: oh yes, that grass growing climate.

The climate where 2 inches of grass goes 4 inches up the sheep's legs.
It must be like our climate where "grass grows all year round" just different.

Can anyone on here control their climate?

(Other than by releasing more carbon, in pursuit of excellence, I meant)

They do not need to own nor operate a cooperative processor because subsidy negates the need to turn a reliable operating profit.... hence why it has evaporated, and ours grows... a matter of necessity.
Change doesn't just happen because it might be a good idea.

Subsidy - a substitute for action plans, the world over.

I think there is something to gain from it. It's water of a few chikkin's backs to me.
