It is possible, but you need to be pretty flexible! Boot release is under rear seat cushion.

That's what I thought. Had he gone down a road and realised it was getting worse so tried to turn around by reversing up the slope or had he come all the way down the hill for some reason?

He must have come down hill. If he reversed he wouldn't have got into that position, the back of the trailer would have dug in to the bank and the truck wouldn't have been snapped in the middle.
