Thinking of home saving some seed this year was just wondering what people use to clean the seed before they sow??

@tw15 has made various gizmos including sieves and an aspirator that attaches to a vacuum cleaner. What is yours contaminated with? You'd be surprised what will go through a normal metering unit. If you're using small Stocks type metering units you may consider cleaning it up a bit.

I get mine done professionally. No real difference in genetic material but you get the big seeds only in the bag.
I am dumb enough to think that is an advantage.

It just has small bits of straw in really was a clean crop that was harvested and yes it's goin through a stocks type applicator

Micro fibre cloths are very good indeed for getting cleavers out if needed!!

Just worried the small bits of straw might bung up the feed rollers. Maybe just have a go and see

Do you do a tgw or whatever tis for osr on fss to get a plant per metre or just to do it on weight

Just put double a standard seed rate, slugs etc are not then a problem.. seed cost is nothing really, bit of DAP and urea in spring with astra kerb as herbicide and thats it, between 1.5 and 2t /ac this year... made a fortune!

I take mine down to South West Seeds and have it cleaned properly. They do a TSW for me. This year as I saved seed last year I have bought new. Should have had two years worth cleaned at once. The stuff left over from last year is germinating perfectly

I want to know if fs seed is so cheap why is bought in conventional so pricey? Royalties are paid all ways.

Blow the chaff out with a leaf blower or suck it off with a vaccume
Small metering devices are not very good with chaff

When combining my fss I up the wind a couple of hundred rpm for the trailer load

Its a rip off, when we went double lows years ago the price doubled overnight... for no reason... then they half filled a bag and called it a 4 ha pack, some farmers are happy to pay so ... suppose its "premium brand!"

It never went cheaper after taking neonic dressing cost either

Got some in a couple of tubs on the window sill

N.b my first year farm saving osr seed as well

I did. Was £30 and 99% germ. That said all the spilled stuff in the field grew too
