I would say any wet farm would look really good atm
This year it's been an advantage and talking to farmers holsworthy way they were saying week or two back "don't want any more rain"
And that's not many miles away and we were crying out for some
Steady rain here too and we got something on that requires a bit of dry Typical

Yeah I think I’d like to see it in the winter... I’ve got river meadows here so used to some very wet ground but then have some drier up above....

Bugger. That very close to witch country. Anyone driven Folly gate towards Sourton Cross will have seen constant a line of filled in pot holes touching. Well that's Sister in laws landing strip for Broomstick Airways . The road wouldn't suffer so bad if she wore flat shoes:(
Sounds like you want them to land in over Meldon Dam :ROFLMAO: anyway I thought you said before that they where based at Dru staten ..now that is a nice area (y).

Uncle Hubert of the Air Ministry used to take all the unexploded bombs recovered by the RAF BD teams down to Meldon where they were steamed out and recycled. I often wondered why they chose Meldon, but I recently discovered that his brother, Walter Dinwoodie, was a civil engineer who designed the dam before the war, so he had contacts in the area. (edited to add I see the current reservoir was opened in 1967 but wartime photos clearly show a dam)
Sorry for the slight sidetrack, but I sometimes potter down there for a nosy about. :)

If it’s the farm I think tis, with about 125 acres, I reckon you could do a lot worse. Other than price of ground crashing to tuppence/hectare once lenin, sorry corbyn’s had his way of course. Not turning it into a brexit thread, doubt anyone’s heard of such things in Northlew.

Interesting though.I hope you write all this down in one place so it doesn't get forgotten :)

Perhaps they did it at the Quarry, those would be uxb's from Exeter or Plymouth possibly I wonder ?? seems a fair long way from anywhere else . The nearest RAF presence would've been at Winkleigh, not that that would make much difference to the subject I guess.

According to the Mrs there was a Dam there before, like you say, but half its size or thereabouts.

I read that the bombs were collected from all over the country wherever the RAF had defused them, Once the fuse was out, they were relatively safe so they could move them about by road or rail. Each service had its own area of interest, so the Army dealt with most bombs on army or public property, The RN dealt with naval property and mines (which were originally naval weapons) while the RAF dealt with its airfields, etc, and bombs found in crashed aircraft of both sides. Word went out to all the RAF units to take their surplus German bombs to Meldon where the explosive was removed. Here are some pics from Meldon. I think the chap in the safety helmet must be the manager from the quarry :):

Brilliant Red Fred.

Well the railway served the quarry so it made sense no doubt ..but also i expect his brother had suggested it as well possibly like you say.

The viaduct in the photo is now a cycle track

We used to see long BR trains loaded with stone coming down the line from there but not nowadays.

Morning! Does anyone here farm near okehampton or have any useful info on the area? I’ve viewed a farm I really like but have no idea about the place.
