Is it a thing with IH tractors to leave hand break on ?
Mate told a story of farmers wife bin put on the new IH tractor , tedding / rowing hay for the day . Hand break left on for day , never worked again. Paint a bit blistered.
is it Not a good brake when in good order ?

No, they weren't overly great when new. Just a thin strip of lining glued to a thin band that clamped to a drum. The wheel power easily overpowered the breaking power hence it being easy to drive with it on. You could do the same with tractors that had disc handbrakes but the smell soon told you and they seemed more durable.

What agrimax said - its an oil splashed wet transmission brake band round a small drum but the power from the engine easily overcame this and a few revolutions could tear the thin lining off the band ruining it forever. Its a cab and gearbox top cover off job to replace it according to the manual - but It was possible to replace the band through the 4wd plate on the side of the gearbox but you had to do this blind and it depended on how far the factory had bent over the split pins. I witnessed an IH dealer mechanic do mine this way and there was much cursing and swearing - but i did fit a loud beeper and its been working fine for over 25 years now. The brake is actually quite efficient - it can hold a big weight on a hill - it just cant stand up to you driving off with it engaged. 5 seconds of carelessness and its bust.

The big amber warning light on the dash is helpfully described in the manual as the 'warning light'
The owners manual sheds a bit more light on what it does.
NB this is for 85 series but the 784 with L cab will be similar - flashes when parking brake is applied.

Another problem....can't get loader to work, anyone know what position this lever (pic) should be in to make front loader work, have tried all the levers but loader still refuses to budge.

That’s your auxiliary lever to work the tipping trailer connection or double acting spool valve if fitted. Is your loader plumbed to the quick release coupling on the back or is it more permanently plumbed?

Are you on Facebook? Very good usefull and very helpful groups on there. IH 4 cyl tractors is one and the Case IH uK group but that one is going through an identity crisis at present!!!

If you look underneath at auxiliary valve you might see a T connection where one side goes to tipping pipe and the other goes to loader.... or you could see an elbow for tipping pipe but 2 pipes coming from the aux valve end plate which are feed and return for loader

Right, looking at your photo you will need the in cab lever in the up position to pump oil and set the diverter valve at the back to feed the hydraulic pipe going to the loader not the quick coupler. Assuming this if your loader has a separate spool block. If it’s just a single acting trip loader then just set the diverter valve and use the lever in cab to control the lift.

Just on phone screen here but looks like the hose and connector in the middle of the picture is your return. The assembly on the extreme right of the picture is the flow. Looks like it's the older type screw on connector, there looks to be another screw on connector with a cap bottom left of that assembly and above that an alloy coloured handle, that's the handle you need to move to get the oil to flow to the loader or the other way to tip a trailer etc.
Don't see it on this screen but assume there is another pipe plumbed into the assembly that takes oil to the loader and as Mur says the handle at your right heel in the cab will have three positions and depending what other loader controls you have will be either up all the time or if no other controls probably up to raise loader, middle to remain at that height and down to lower the loader

The tractor has obviously had some attachment fitted on rear where continuous pumping is needed without seeing tractor I can only speculate what is problem ... I am sure someone is thinking what do I know about IH
From 1976 until 1980 I worked at main IH dealer.. I remember the 84 series tractors at the Smithfield show at Earls Court in London December

Thanks for your reply, have tried what you have said but without any joy, as startinghandle said,no I havnt changed the hydraulic filter yet but wouldn't you feel the engine labour a bit if it was trying to pump fluid to the loader.......where is the filter on these machines??.

If the lift arms and steering are working,I doubt that the filter is the problem.
It's behind the left back wheel. 19mm spanner to remove the bowl. Some oil will run out but not all. Replace the filter and make sure the bypass screen is clean. Replace the oring and don't overtighten the bolt(15ftlbs torque...just nipped up).Have you topped up the oil yet? Supposed to be Hytran but UTTO or SUTO will be fine. An inch above the full mark with a loader fitted. If the steering doesn't work after the filter change, you'll need to bleed the system by slackening the steel pipe union below the filter and starting the engine til oil comes out,or by removing the priority valve and spring. Big bung under the filter to the front.
Presumably, with the rear plumbing as it is,there must be a spool valve fitted to work the loader rams,so with the auxiliary lever pulled back to feed the spool, you wouldn't notice the engine labour as the pressurised oil is returning to the back end freely. Remove the filler cap above the T piece and pull the lever back and see if oil is being returned.

All solved now, the problem was the handle on the the rear assembly controlling fluid to the loader/trailer, it was slightly bent & not going full distance to feed the loader , thanks for all your replies guys & pointing me in the right direction!!, now to get on with the body work!!

Another problem, can't get the PTO working... am I doing something wrong as i believe it was working when I got the tractor, but as with the loader in the earlier thread (which is working fine now) am I pulling the wrong levers???,other than that the project is almost finished just inside the cab to tidy up now.

Tidy looking that!
Pto lever is 3rd knob in from the mudguard. Nearest the seat at the back. Push forward to the indent to feather start and on forward to work.
