I wouldn't be sure that the underpinning of the EU by Germany was purely altruistic. The country needed a market for its cars and other goods after all.For what the southern European economies owe the ECB, which is effectively underwritten by Germany, I'd say they had their debts paid in full and then some. Maybe that's what they are hoping? Have the debts cleared so they can start another spending spree paid for by someone else?
Punitive reparations imposed on the Weimar Republic (Germany) after WW1 caused the power vacuum that allowed Hitler in and led to WW2. Clearly, memories are fading, though it's not unusual for sabre rattling against foreign powers in an effort to cover up failing domestic policies. Mussolini was but Italy wasn't always as keen. It all got a bit messy in 1943 when he was arrested by King Victor Emmanuel III, factions within the country actually switched to the allies side during the latter part of the warMy history must be sadly lacking, I thought Mussolini was on the same side as Germany.
