Be a real shame if it doesn't stand.
I'll be sad. And pee'd off!

Its looked like a pretty average crop until now. Winter barleys funny stuff, completely different to spring. Can judge spring stuff when its going to be decent and when to put regulator on. It looks like silage. Winter just seems to grow up.

In a normal year, it is Today, June 14th when we first notice WB starting to turn here. This year, we noticed some of it on the lighter land starting to turn June 4th.

Why it normally chooses my Birthday to want to start turning, I don’t know. But this year it’s a milestone year, which I’d hoped might be avoided by lockdown and that I could remain in my last decade for a bit longer.
Apparently not!

However, even though the Barley is turning earlier than normal, it looks promising here. Taken 2nd June.

Been a real hoot here this time.

We've got about 25% completely bare patches due to the wet autumn, then 60% of it died well back in the drought, and now 10% has lodged in the thunderstorms.

:joyful: :joyful:
That fields not looking so hot on the headland! Rain came on as I finished that field and never got back to it for a fortnight.

Winter barley turning, I reckon 7th July. Osr has really started to turn after the rain last week. Could nearly see it changing colour

I reckon 10th July.

As to yields, even if we get nothing this time our 2yr average will be about the same as our 70yr average.

:D :D
I think our yields here are obviously going to be down, but we got 27mm of rain last week which will help the spring crops especially. Spring barley last year on my grandads farm yielded 8.5t/ha now it’s all gone from his shed, it won’t be doing that this year, I think it can 6.5 though.

When I used to grow winter barley ( last crop 10 years ago). I would normally start around the 18 July then straight into rape. If it becomes hot again now I think the rape will be around the 2nd/ 3rd week of July. it will depend on the weather after the roundup is applied. Essex area

Seeing as the sun has been on strike for 10 days, with a return to normal service not expected until next weekend, I reckon we're back to normal: last week of July/turn of the month.

Cassia as 4th cereal after grass. 140 units, nothing else from bag. My partner agronomist always reckons Highland show week to be peak risk for lodging - when would that have been?

Crafty beggar has me well stitched up - just when the need for advice twindles, he gets to supply me with gas to try to chase the crows on.

I do hope that this doesn't become a 2019 repeat, where excellent crops on 1st June showed their disgust at weeks of dull & damp at harvest.
