Just add a good Hereford bull, and get the perfect suckler Cow ;)

Got a few here, big meaty cows about 9th calving, superb calf every time. Also got a few B&W crosses that are definitely in the hatrack category. Our Hereford will produce a decent calf out of them, but not a patch on the pukka FriesanX Hereford Mums.
Never bred to the Hereford always loved a sim cross but got lazy lately and stick to the Angus . Maybe another year I might stick in one for fun

no, you are wrong,, the intention is, for these calves to be reared, Tesco, currently 8 weeks, and have stated they will increase that age, to make sure they are reared, and others are following. This is nothing to do with farming, its a public relation exercise, that has not been thought through.

Long wondered about this when I have poked my nose in the calf ring...

Bought a few over the years with a Tesco sticker on the Passport telling me what to do... How can this work? Once a calf has been sold through the Ring, it's no longer the breeders problem??

Bugger I only just weaned one off this on Sunday.
I had it marked down for 2 services the last one to calve in July which is what I was planning for.
Fingers crossed it’s got some milk to keep
It going (It looks to have but I’m a little worried about colostrum due to last calf only just coming off)
Anybody come a cropper like this before? If so what did you do?View attachment 887732
9 months and 20 days since it last calved.

Had a little "cockup" a couple of years ago, similiar to this. Not much grass about at the time, so brought them both in and housed in a shed and chucked cake at the cow to try and kick the milk into production... Bottled the calf as well, but gave up after a week, she just wasn't going to come into milk. :-(

Went and got a mate for the calf, and reared them together. A PITA, but that's stock rearing!! ;)

Really want to try these but Herself doesn't think they will work.... and I need her help to put them in!! I will try a few this Autumn if I keep the calves overwinter
leave them in a week then split them from mum, works well for most of them but we have had one or two get round them, don't leave them in to long as they can rub the middle bit of their nose

Went on a open day to this one, really interesting...

I wonder why they stock at low density, both seem to. Possibly not allowed to bunch stock in the case of the suckler herd.

The Pendeen herd is on open moorland that hasn't been farmed for 60 yrs so probably a bit of a experiment to see the effects the cattle have on that environment. They are left more or less free range on the moor and great at traffic calming as quite often sit in the roads.

re dairy bull calves it doesn’t have to be that way we averaged £220/calf that’s Belgium blues, some Montbeliarde and fleckvieh cross as well as Hereford by our bull pictured, good old fashioned Hereford takes some beating in my opinion!

First of all how independent is her study?
One of the things that made me go Organic was seeing a program about old meadows & they mentioned that there are several species of plants that can't survive with any inputs of synthetic fertilizers, so if it damages some plants what damage can it be doing to the soil fauna which we can't see?
My 'personal ' view is it disrupts natures natural balance.
