if the lad from cupar can afford to send cattle to Darlington. Would it not pay to send them north?

How much weight did your cattle lose from home today then?
All my cattle usually get weighed on a Tuesday when I sort them for Thirsk on Thursday, they usually lose 14-24kg. It doesn't matter if in market at 6am or 1.30pm the still lose the same, usually sold around 2.30.
I know of 3 farmers who take cattle to the market mentioned and where losing up to 40 kilos, then "textgate" happened and things seemed to improve. 2 have gone else where, 1 sticking at moment.

I'm not saying this to deliberately upset people but it's something I feel very strongly. When you see how the live markets system is pushing prices upwards, anyone who has been selling dead weight rather than live in recent years should be hanging their heads in shame

Im not wanting to argue or upset anyone either but... i went live with lambs first couple of weeks of july this year with my best sorts and sent ofhers dead same weeks...i was between £5 and £8 better dead for my type of lambs....i worked out if i took them all live i would be around £5000 short by the end of the season .
So its alright saying go live but what would anyone else do in my situation?

Give over, it's not that when you try to sell woolshedders, lambs with woolly heads etc and the buyers pull faces and do their level best to pull them back, when you know those lambs will do perfectly well when they hang them up. I sell both ways, according to what I think is best for my business. I won't leave myself out of pocket to please the likes of you!

The live system is essential but is not without its faults.

Bit harsh. As much as i would like everyone to sell live i dont think the markets we have left could cope with the sheer numbers if everybody decided to sell live.

I see ireland just cannot rid its meat packing /slaughtering plants of coronavirus, logistics of killing cattle and sheep is a massive headache for them and must be helping our trade. I can quite easy see £4 /kg for beef now in the coming months

If I'd of sold my cattle live over the last 2 years I'd of got less for them. Even now there's not much in it, between our local (55 mile away) market.an the abattoir 15 mile away.
