I was moving the cows this morning onto fresh herbal ley and ryegrass (trial plots) the cows walked over the ryegrass to get at the herbal ley (which is no surprise as they always do) but I stayed to watch them for 5 minutes. This is obviously all non-scientifc of course but it was very interesting to watch what they were eating.
The calves loved the lucerne, and were walking from each plant to get at another (perfect by me as they need the protein unlike the cows!)
Whereas the cows were after the plantain and chicory, they again were walking between plants to get at it - they would also eat any lucerne if they were passing by it.
Neither were eating any grass to begin with (atleast not on purpose!) They were nibbling at the clovers but were definitely more interested in the plantain, chicory and lucerne. Was quite interesting to watch as certain cows seemed to prefer the chicory and others the plantain!
Not sure if I've already shared this photo but its of last time they were in this field. They were let in from the left, the ryegrass and white clover control mix is on the left and the herbal ley is on the right. As you can see they have walked over the ryegrass to get at the herbal ley
