Question for a truck mechanic I’ve stumbled upon a cattle truck I’m Interested in buying it’s a man tgl 12.180 lovely clean well minded truck but it’s automatic and my mechanic is saying they are an nightmare that man have worst auto box on the market should I run away from it??

Not much, of any experience of MAN, mainly Scania, part Volvo/daf and loads of trailers

If he says it's that bad a box of Google main issues with it, and prices to fix. Factor that into what you wanna pay

I can’t seem to find anything about it on google I rang local truck breaker aswell he reckons they ok but could stop for no reason at anytime and €3k to get them moving and only by main dealer!!

if it is an auto box what you have is a box full of clutches and cutches wear out, the volvo auto box was a normal non auto box with an auto shift mechanism fitted to it,

I think it has a Clutch but it runs of auto selector aswell like Volvo set up

I drove one and liked it, it had no problems in the time I drove it (several years). Bigger unit than yours though. Singularly unhelpful, sorry.

My friend had a few tgl there’s still one in the yard with a knackered box. I was gobsmacked when he told me the same as you. It was simply not worth repairing. Shame as they are lovely little wagons I found. Perhaps don’t be too put off though especially if it’s the right price. There’s undoubtably horror stories with every manufacturer

What gearbox is in it ?? Is it the zf as-tronic ??

I’m just told auto it’s a 2012 truck I’m going to see it tomorrow hopefully a friend near it viewed it yesterday said the whole outfit it mint

I have a 12t daf with the zf as tronic and its lovely to drive, once you get used to it.

The box itself is very strong, but they can suffer wiring issues on the lorry itself, and the electric charge pump / powerpack.

Id buy it. Kernohans have parts for most lorries.

I think man is a different box I’m told they aren’t as good as the rest

Plenty of man lorries on the road anyway, I used to have same tractors which some people say are no good, and I found them ok

It'll be ZF. I'd guess at it being an Ecolite 800.
