there was a spring calving herd sold at exeter last friday, very tidy herd, and genuine reason for sale, they averaged just short of £1100, all in, fair price, even the not i/c ones, and faulted.
There are a huge amount of milkers on the market, clear TB tests are bringing a lot onto the mkt. Was told several 1,000, on, or hoping, for sale, in the west country, in the next month. There has been a high number of dairy sold, all through this year, somewhat surprised the mkt has stayed up, but for those selling, l am glad that it has. It would take an extremely good offer, for us to buy, at the moment, we are happy with what we have !

Was hoping to pick up a lorry load of them, but came back with nothing, needed to be cheaper, the other herd dispersal was very cheap, but didn't hear why?

l only received a grunt on that question, but l thought they looked cheapish, must have been a reason, ages to get clear test ? Marteye can be a little deceiving, so might not be as seen, by eye.
Get told the spring calvers only want to pay £1,000/head, which is about right, those friday, have a long time to start paying back. But the proper dispersal, did look some nice cows, and genuine. The barren trade could get stronger, as winter nears, so that drives price a bit, but some of the more jersey types, don't make a lot, sent on 2 jx last week, both 8th calvers, av £250, not a lot, when a plain hol, came back at £650, she was plain, and old, all 3 better suited for chewing gum ! But, they'd done their turn, and lasted well, hol was 6th, A lot of cows never reach that age. We are not looking, we have 2 nice tight blocks, aut/spr, main of them 6 weeks each, ideal ! There is a herd coming up, at frome mkt, l don't know anything about it, except xbred, usually not so steep, as kivells, they do not have the facilities there, might be worth a punt, if looking.

Our neighbors has 42 incalf cows turn up from JG £850 a head most 2 or 3rd lactation, they are pleased.

you can do something with them, at that price, depending on what they are, spring calvers great, if autumn, cheap ! We did have a load in 2 wks ago, reckon they were just over killing price, but all i/c exactly when we want them, topped us up nicely, av £825, but some older, and 2 x 9th, all tidy, and i/c to BB, case of 'all, or nothing' !

there is usually a short 'window' buying spr calvers, jan, feb, every one wants replacements at the start of their block, further on into block, price reduces, and those spr cows, are not every bodies cup of tea, so a more limited clientele !.
Didn't happen this year, they kept getting more expensive as time went on, kick myself for not buying a very cheap load of cows in January.

l don't think anybody can explain the prices of all stock, at the moment, with exports still down 30%, going on past experience, everything should be dirt cheap, and it is exactly the opposite. Farmers need the prices, but all our suppliers have pushed their prices up, to match. If there is a return to 'normal' pricing, whatever normal is, there will be a blood bath among suppliers.

So.......
One of this years vet student who applied through here is a vegan.
Took a week to get it out of her as she didn't want us to judge, not a militant type just how it is. No biggy.

But......
Her views on climate change are that animal agriculture is all to blame and should be stopped straight away.
That poses the question, what's she doing becoming a vet?

Shes happy to feed her dog minced calves!

It is going to make for a frosty 2nd wk.
If I don't log on for a while I'm probably in jail for stomach tubing a calf.

She has said that she is delighted that we look after and care for our animals!

Interesting and not 100% comfortable
