Wilton fair THURSDAY 14th OCTOBER 2021 1455 Sheep Forward Although the number of sheep forward was disappointing there was a strong trade and a good atmosphere throughout the day as 51 vendors sold to 68 purchasers emphasising that Wilton Fair is still an important date in the local sheep calendar. The warm and sunny day, combined with the traditional grass pens certainly allowed the sheep to be shown off to their best advantage and long may this continue. Store lamb trade is particularly strong and numbers were very thin so we hope for a better entry to meet buyer’s requirements at this year’s last Fair on Thursday 18th November.
Older Ewes (183) Auctioneer Simon Whaley Trade: Just a few on offer in this section but generally a good trade throughout with prices chiefly in excess of vendors expectations, more could have been sold to advantage. Top price £112 per head for Lleyn x 4-teeth ewes from Charlie Fielder of Romsey. Some principal prices realised were:- Romney Full Mouth £77 to £75 Broken Mouth £60 Mule Broken Mouth £61 Broken Mouth, GOU £47 Grazers £44 LLeyn 4-Teeth £112 Charollais x Full Mouth £78 Suffolk & Texel x Grazers £80 Swaledale Full Mouth £61 Broken Mouth, GOU £47 Berrichon Grazers £90 Mixed Breeds & Ages £75
Small & Minority Breeds (80) Auctioneer Simon Whaley Trade: Really pleasing to see the small & minority breeds continuing to be in keen demand to keep these breeds alive! Wiltshire Horn in particular very keenly sought with several buyers going home empty handed after a keenly fought contest. Top price in this section £118 for Wiltshire Horn ewes of 2T age from Marsh Farm Ibberton. Some principal prices realised were:- Wiltshire Horn 2-Teeth Ewes £122 to £118 Ewe Lambs £101 to £80 Herdwick Ewes Mixed Ages £36 Black Welsh Mountain 2-Teeth Ewes £94 Badger Face 6-Teeth Ewes, GOU £65 Jacob Mixed Ages Ewes,GOU £46 Portland Mixed Age Ewes, GOU £26 Shetland Full & Broken Mouth Ewes £30 Soay Mixed Age Ewes £17
2 Teeth Breeding Ewes (546) Auctioneer Iain Soutar Numbers were actually up in this section on the same sale last year bolstered by a couple of big runs of Mules. Demand seemed to be well matched to supply and trade was a little sharper than expected with a top price of £181 to a small pen of good Lleyns from Charlie Fielder. Mules reached £173 (twice) for pens from a strong run of over 200 from Simon Bennett which shone in the sun and appeared to have benefitted from another month’s grass moving on £13 from September’s consignment. Well bred pens from Faccombe Estate reached £170 whilst a nice run of mainly lighter headed sheep from Polehampton Farm Partnership made to £158 going to six different buyers. Other breeds which were in small numbers still created plenty of interest with Berrichons from Tarrant Valley Agricultural making £172, Romneys from Martin Furey £164, Suffolk x £123 from Nicola Woodhall and Swaledales £111 from Nathan Coutts. Mules (435) £173 to £138 Suffolk x (73) £123 to £91 Lleyn (15) £181 to £134 Romney (10) @ £164 Berrichon (5) @ £172 Swaledale (5) @ £111
Lambs (537) Auctioneer Iain Soutar Ewe lambs (222) Enough interest to push prices above those for the stores but only by a small margin. Strong Lleyn x Mule lambs from Angus Mann and family topped the day at £106 to complete a good day for the Lleyn breed with Suffolk x Mule to £98 from Michael Brodie and Texel x to £94 from Howard and Alison Smith, Bramshaw Hill Farming. Lleyn x @ £106 Suffolk x £98 to £92 Texel x £94 to £92 Charollais x @ £90.50

Store lambs (315) We knew we would be short of store lambs on last year as at that sale we had 600 from two flock dispersals but even so this year’s entry was woefully short for buyer’s requirements meaning that although there weren’t enough on offer for some of our usual bidders to travel trade was still exceptionally strong with one or two people going home empty handed. No forward lambs on show but prices regularly exceeding £90 with a joint top of £92 going to Suffolk x from Terry and Pauline Cook and Will, George and Gemma Edwards, Texel x from Joe Windibank and a pen of mixed breeds from Sarah Clarke. A strong trade is virtually guaranteed for November. Suffolk x £92 to £76 Texel x £92 to £79.50 Lleyn x @ £92 Herdwick x @ £30

M V Accredited Rams (68) Auctioneer Ian Tanner Trade: An entry short of catalogue (24 Charollais rams failing to arrive!). However those who attended found a tremendous trade, which would certainly be on a par with September’s very lively level of demand. Countless rams £400 plus, with Continental types eagerly contested. The best topped at 505gns or £530 from Georgie Helyer, whilst a super run of Charollais x Texel from Messrs Williams flew to 490gns or £514. A price of note, a smart Charollais ram lamb topping at a wonderful 480gns or £504 from Messrs Brown. Native rams found fierce support for both Suffolk’s and LLeyn’s with Hampshire Down’s trading at harder levels than September. Isle of Wight regulars Paddy Margham and Matt Legge topped the Suffolk’s both selling rams to 430gns or £451. LLeyn’s sold to a terrific 445gns or £467 from Derek Bond. Of the rest a smart Poll Dorset ram lamb from Phillip Brooks sold to an excellent 490gns or £514. Trade very brisk with yet another ringside full of customers. Texel Shearlings (14) 505gns to 200gns av. 395gns or £415 Chartex + Charollais x Shearlings (9) 490gns to 230gns av. 380gns or £399 Charollais Ram Lambs (3) 480gns to 365gns av. 415gns or £435 Suffolk Shearling (12) 430gns to 310gns av. 351gns or £369 Suffolk Ram Lambs (10) 360gns to 150gns av. 243gns or £255 Hampshire Down Shearling (9) 345gns to 300gns av. 322gns or £338 Lleyn Shearling (5) 445gns to 320gns av. 360gns or £378 Shropshire Shearling (3) 100gns or £105 Poll Dorset Ram Lamb (1) 490gns or £514 Bleu Du Maine Ram Lamb (1) 240gns or £252

Non Accredited Rams (41) Auctioneer Ian Tanner Trade: A useful entry for October with yet again fierce demand for all but the rare breed types and the poor or small for age sorts. Anything showing size and quality eagerly contested. The best £300 plus to top at £395 for Texel’s from a super run from regular senders the Williams family. Trade in abundance for the right types! Texel Shearling (7) £395 to £185 Texel 4-tooth (1) £125 Texel full mouth (1) £100 Suffolk Shearling (5) £205 to £175 Suftex Shearling (1) £280 Zwartbles Shearling (1) £60 Herdwick Shearling (1) £155 Chartex 4-6 tooth (7) £180 to £136 Blue Faced Leicester Shearling (1) £260 Teaser Rams (4) £75-£60

Store cattle look a good trade at Kirby although a lot are top end
There has been some tremendous cattle in Kirkby today and the price to go with them £1500+ regular away, after all the "big hitters" were sold people went home and trade dropped off for the last 150 sold, the cattle weren't as good as earlier in the sale but still some very good cattle to be had at fairly sensible money.

This used to be a massive sale...Why is it now so low on numbers are the sheep numbers around the catchment that short

Yes I agree I put that on then looked at the stream and it had cooled off significantly but so had some of the cattle. The sale I was at on Saturday was the same they were dear the first few hours then dropped £100/£150 ish later on.

the main trade at wilton was 2t ewes brought down off the plain after summer (golden hoof ) , bought previous year as lambs at northern sales , Arable incentives have reduced farmers keeping sheep up there ,(except @Tim white lol ) very few arable boys have sheep these days , easier to sit in a fendt claiming all sorts of sub than chase sheep about . that also affects store numbers , still busy in sept though . can see Maybe clock going back if new elms encourage stock on tillage ground

Was just thinking any you big store lamb buyers that put a lot of sheep out on keep, have you had any people you have keep off say they either don't want any or less or want shifting quicker than normal? Cos of fertiliser cost is my thinking behind this question.

Sorry off topic but just sat here and came across my mind.
Cant see it will make a lot of difference..leave one farm end of Jan...left a few fields with wire went back and cleared up at end Feb,more grass there than when i put the sheep in...by end of March it had all gone brown...sheep just tidy up cant see it making any difference to be honest

Yep agreed all the dairy boys get twitchy in Jan but as long as you don't skin the ground you wouldn't know there had been any sheep in even if grazed till end Feb
