Once went to Carlisle many years ago and there was an auctioneer called heslop selling fat cattle he was selling one every 15/20 seconds twice around the ring as fast as they could go they must of had some good drovers because they keeping plenty of cattle at him

yep. Always gets a flyer. Cattle are peas in a pod. Does fill the wagons quick for the buyers though

I think John Uffold at ludlow may of been similar ,600 in 3 hours springs to mind,they didnt even get the chance to run around twice,the theory been you had to bid or you had missed your chance

I don’t know why more don’t do it , that singles malarkey is painfull and everytime I’ve seen big well batched lots they have been a flyer .

Seen that with store lambs..i always wait till he starts to run out of steam

It’s area based a bit , I think up here they are a bit suspect of singles unless they are show stoppers , they think they must be something wrong with them , the dearest cattle I have ever seen were in a lot they couldn’t get them all in the ring they were down the ally as well could t get the gate shut . I prefer that , i go for my dinner when mr sell them one at time comes in

Was just thinking any you big store lamb buyers that put a lot of sheep out on keep, have you had any people you have keep off say they either don't want any or less or want shifting quicker than normal? Cos of fertiliser cost is my thinking behind this question.

Don’t think I’ll have many on grass by the end of January this time. But we’ve plenty of crop so I’ll want them off grass by then anyway so I don’t think it will affect us too badly touch wood

Theres a fella in Islay that sells 120 aa stores in March/April. All done in 4 lots . Through quicker than some guys with 5 to sell

If they are matched bunches it’s the way too do it!

Get the buyers laughing and the selling fast paced it’s amazing how the trade keeps up. Roy Waller at Chelford on the calves was a swine for it. Get them all laughing then take them a couple of extras.

I'm not a big store lamb buyer but I've heard of a few farms that are getting paid £35 an acre to have no stock on the fields from Nov 1st. No rhyme or reason to the type of farm either by the sounds of it, 2 good dairy farms, one down on the fylde coast, one in the valley I live, and then a bit of a rough windy corner of a very extensive grazing spot. I think that'll make more difference than till price.

I'm continuing my tour of UK markets.
There is so good lamb up there, they seem to like Suffolk cross cheviots that look strong to me, they are about £10 head less than down here so about the same by the time you get them home.
My highlight though was someone with 12 pure Shetland lambs sold in 4 lots, the ranged from £16 for the best down to £1 for the smallest (but healthy and ran round the ring well)!
Some of the more remote islands out there must be very hard for both people and stock to live.

Not everyone is such a big way yhat they can handle such numbers i prefer to buy them as singles or pairs
