I,m not so sure anymore, if there is a fault, does it matter if you have selected 0, 540, or 1000 etc. my one tractor is electric to start and stop the pto but a lever on a cable to change from 540 to 1000, there is no neutral on that lever. If you turn the tractor off, you can,t turn the pto shaft which can make it difficult to connect some bigger implements.

Have you tried putting the lever halfway between the 540 and 1000?

Must admit on both Dyna-vt tractors here if iam not using the PTO there always in Neutral anyways.
The D6 isnt as such but deffo not switched on never once have i seen any electric on/off issues on a PTO engagement on a single massey here in 30years of using them

Unless you have switched them to neutral, the yellow light flashes in the dash of course, which is a bit of an incentive. This gives two levels of accident protection in that to start the PTO you need to select the ratio before switching the PTO on.
However, if there were other people about, it would certainly pay to have a third level of protection while working on an implement… stopping the engine and removing the key so other people could not start the PTO without knowing you were working on it.

Always remember when people around you when you’re playing with PTO
I know this from experience after nearly having my ankle just below the shin bone amputated
My driver and myself went to move a terra Gator lime spreader which was towing a low loader at the time which was loaded.
He asked me to look at light socket above the spinning discs
so I jumped up and my leg was in between the discs on shelf standing there , my driver had disappeared looking at something else The next thing I heard the engine starting up and immediately engaging the PTO
The machine was having electrical problem which started the PTO the Machine was going into Lister Wilder to be sorted out the following morning . But my driver had forgot I was on the back of the machine when he started the engine up and engaged the PTO engaging the spinning discs which my leg was in between so my leg was shredded just above my ankle and below my knee I had to pull it out and jump off the machine at the same time missing the towbar of the low loader and the headboard at the same time this cost me four months of work and I have scar on my leg where it was shredded the muscles and breaking my bones in my leg and I was very lucky ! I was in theatre for six hours the hospital was fantastic so was the ambulance service.

The thing was my driver just forgot that I was on the back of the machine as he was concentrating on doing what he was doing.

One of the issues is if you turn off the engine then on some tractors you can't turn the shaft or at least it is very difficult by hand. H&S should look at this because things like this encourage you not to turn off the engine . H&S should bring in rules that are not only safe but convenient, if some thing is safe but inconvenient then shortcut will be taken. I know H&S need to raise money somehow but safety should come first not money raising.

Is that actually true? If you put the pto in neutral then turn off the engine the pto will turn freely. Even electrically switchable pro’s this has been the case

Not all tractors have a shiftable PTO. Many have swappable shaft or fixed single speed PTO even though they have iPTO. Some will not or are very difficult to turn with the engine off. I think some modern Kubota models are like this, not only tractors from the 1990’s or earlier.

I chased up a non supplied instruction book for a new AGCO supplied machine. Sh1t hit the fan when i called finance to tell them i was witholding DD after no joy with dealer.
H and S makes them wake up smartish!

If the machine is new on own brand finance I found this route useful.

WHY WHY WHY have I never thought of this before??!!

I always turn the engine off (and usually put the key in my pocket too so nobody else can accidently jump in and start it) - but never occurred to me to put the speed selector between gears to make it easier to spin!

Both the case and valtras here have PTOs you can put into neutral, this is always done when not using a machine.

The case has a selectable 540 or land drive and a clutch lever. Dealer told me from new to put selector into N and let the clutch re-engage to save the plates.

It cant be in both at same time so should be a spot where it's in no mans land
I had a look this morning, seemed to me it was in one or the other, I couldn't find the Inbetween, certainly would be hit and miss if relying on it for health and safety reasons, tractor off is the safest but as already said you can't turn the shaft.

New valtra disengages when you leave the seat, but onto to N not completely out of gear so to speak
Yes, that's great if it works as it should but a mouse living under the seat might affect the working of it, the way I see it, why do tractors have PTO button on the mudguard s, a lot use them for attaching shafts, alignment etc.

I think it’s the new mother regs that’s come in on newer tractors that you have to select the pto to work when off seat either from the fender or switch in cab
There’s a option in computer to select it these are the newer tractors guessing within five years
