I run 950 ewes, 1100 ewe lambs and 550 tack stores, I can do 40 hours paid work a week (I'm up now at 2.30 to do the vat return), but don't spend a day a week gossiping in markets, going to ag merchants, lent on a gate talking to next door or sat in house complaining there is no money in the job.
I want to start rearing calves later in the year, I want to try 30 and rear them up to 18 month store to sell to these people that want grazing cattle for GS4 schemes, I don't think they should take me much more than 4 hours a week once off milk.
Hell your keen with the vat

When you look at the bones of it all GUTH is right though. We are all running round like headless chickens trying to do paid work and look after a lot of stock, add family time into the mix as well it’s not a great situation. Everything’s fine when it’s running sweet but sheep get out or something and you soon lose hours.
And they wonder why farming has high rates of fatigue & depression.
We should be talking about who can make a profit from the least number of cows & enjoys their time off, perhaps there's more of that in the crops section ;)

I’m saying he’s wrong, maybe some of us are stretched to thin but they may also prefer it 🤷🏻‍♂️
I’m happy where I am at the moment or I wouldn’t be doing it, also spending a lot of time with the family 👍🏻 Unless someone knows exactly what goes on you can’t judge in my opinion….

When I read many hundreds of cattle and thousands of sheep members on here claim its possible to look after and have a full time job, I wonder if the same applies to those we deal with. Is the manager of my local Tesco out doing a paper round before he goes to work, is he doing paper work at 2.30 so he can spend more time stacking shelfs or maybe his wife does all his paper work as well as her own full time job. How I wish my accountant would get a full time job so he could do my tax return for less.

Exactly it’s not a dig at anyone, I just know from my own life it’s not ideal although I do enjoy most of what I do.

'English Pastoral' by James Rebanks is very good on how farming got into this state. Well worth a read.

But the tesco manager isn't trying to buy the store tho is he. Plenty of other jobs where people are trying to get on and not just be happy with there lot have to work stupid hours, 2 members of my family work through the night as well as do the day work, so they can expand.
