Water abstraction for hydro turbine

Just wondering is there a maximum amount (%) of water you can divert from any watercourse in the UK for hydro schemes or is each scheme evaluated separately in terms of abstraction.

Depends on scale but EA will soon make any project totally unworkable. For small projects stealth is your friend.
My cousin put in a hydro electric turbine about ten years ago. Absolute nightmare dealing with "experts" and they still monitor the amount of water he's taking from the stream.
You'd think they'd try to help as much as they could :banghead:

years ago, a lecturer in the college gave his opinion for the above. Big companies make lots of money with power supply. Getting lots of small independent hydro schemes would reduce their profits, so there are lots of lobbyists ensuring government policy does not let that happen. Governments like a few big players who they can get into bed with, rather than lots of small independent individuals, hence, all government policies are to reduce independence. Look at what is happening to the food chain, small abattoirs going, a few big food companies taking over. Seed saving becoming a problem (with patenting life), so everyone has to buy from the few seed suppliers. Repairing your own tractor a problem, with access to the multinationals software systems....etc.

That is the problem. We now have the technology to generate all the UK electric needs from Hydro but it will not happen due to the vested interest of a very small minority.

environmental impact assessment of water extraction for a micro hydro scheme, results of which could make the scheme untenable, however stepping back, which is the greater problem for the world, river ecosystems or digging up coal/drilling for oil/gas. If we only concentrate on the water voles, crayfish etc we end up with drilling for oil in the arctic or felling old growth forests in the Americas which causes far more damage I think. As you say, a small minority create the rules which on the surface are correct, but have an underlying agenda which is very good for them but not good for the majority.

I would be shocked if that gave 200 watts or have they confused Kw / hour and Kwh / day
as soon as they put any load on that the impellor will stall
That was my thought....

Rambler Holidays installed a wheel hydro system near here at Lemsford Mill many years ago. It is much bigger than that, uses directed flow and maxes out at 15Kw. Long term it averages about 6Kw and it takes most of the flow of the river Lee at that point.
