I can’t see breeders being dear. We were all having a flyer last year and breeders weren't exactly OTT. Lot of confidence has been knocked out since then. Unfortunately the truth is that less and less of us want too lamb sheep...
Agree that there’s less folk wanting to lamb sheep but the trade these ewes have been this spring I can see a few folk buying ewes instead of lambs . £50-£60 would have bought you good feeding ewes even some correct ewes last backend,it wouldn’t have been difficult to turn them into £130 ewes in the last month. That itself will put a strong bottom in the old ewe trade this backend.

I sold some half decent old ewes Monday for £151,
they would have been worth £80-£90 in the autumn .
Would I buy them back at that level this autumn hoping for the same , not too sure.

What I am hoping will happen is what happened in lockdown.

People actually deciding that you can eat better and more cost effectively at home.

Trade up at weekends for a special meal.
A leg of lamb or steak washed down with a pint organic milk of course.

There will be a proportion of the consumer's that can not do this.

With cereals becoming increasingly less cost effective to feed to pig and poultry, the cheap meats, red meat becomes an option in the weekly shop.
Yes, and if you look at it, first to go has been subscription tv. I think there will be huge pressure on mobile phone deals next.
People don’t seem to be complaining about food as much as normal because everything else has gone up faster

Those that buy ewe lambs too run too shearlings then sell them! They do that because they don’t want too/ can’t lamb them. I can’t remember what year it was but not long ago we had a good summer but the Devon/Cornwall boys were burnt too a crisp and couldn’t shift shearlings until it rained at the end of September. That led too very suppressed demand at all the early sales.
2018. Did as everyone said and killed bottom end tex hoggs for 140 to 150. Bought some ncm ewe hoggs from Bentham in May fair for £105. Didnt rain all summer. Sold the best texels in August breeding sale at Shrewsbury for £143 ( and they were smart even if i say so myself) and sold the mules for £105 in September. Everywhere was burnt no grass anywhere. Funny old game.

You are all wishful thinkers.Who is going to sell good breeding gimmers/shearlings for £130 this Autumn?..................no one! And besides ,its going to be a p!ss wet Summer. Rainfall averages have been well below normal for several months all over the Country.............................It always makes up and balances out.

Do you not remember 2018? Hoggs on fire in the Spring, so everyone talking the breeding trade up for the Autumn. A long dry summer followed, so everyone was short of grass and breeders made no more than they would of fat in April/May.

Do you feel lucky?

Dry ewe hoggs in Hereford yesterday looks very plain apart from the Suffolk mules making £130ish the rest all just breaking the £100 mark ??? Not sure what they looked like but they sound like they’d of been better money killed from the report 😵💫

Thats what I did this time. The only issue is that old ewes eat a hell of a lot of forage! By the time you get too January 1000 old ewes will have eaten the equivalent too 1000 hoggs kept until March! I sold a ruck just before Christmas, and a ruck in late Jan. made profit but nothing startling. Its only this last 6 weeks when its been a real case of money for old rope.

I really don’t know where the breeders will be. Best I can see is stand on from last year but I reckon ewe cake price will keep a lid on stocking densities too a point.
